This wine is a deep, alluring purple in the glass, boasting aromas of blueberry, wild raspberry, and liquorice with hints of violet and allspice. On the palate, it is full-bodied, with an inviting richness. Notes of toasted cedar and nutmeg are neatly integrated with red berry fruit. The grapes come from D.O. Yecla in eastern Spain on the Murcia Plateau, where the vines are planted at an altitude of 700 metres and benefit from excellent diurnal temperature differences. The hot summer days are tempered by cool nights, which produces balanced wines.

This wine is made from a blend of 3 terroirs, hence the name ‘Côté Sud’. The Syrah vines are 30 years old and the Grenache vines are 50 years old.

Avesso is a rare, indigenous variety from the Vinho Verde region producing aromatic wines with characteristic stone fruit flavours. Avesso translates as ‘reverse or opposite’ as it produces wines that are typically lower in acidity and higher in potential alcohol, unlike the majority of other native grapes from Vinho Verde. However, it can be a challenging variety to cultivate, which has led to a decrease in production of this unique grape. Traditionally used in a blend, Avesso is now coming into its own as a 100% varietal wine. The vines for this wine are grown in Baião, which is located in the extreme south-east of the Vinho Verde DOC. The region benefits from excellent sun exposure, hot summer days and cool winter nights which contributes to the aromatic character of the wine and the balance between concentrated fruit flavours, alcohol and the crisp natural acidity Vinho Verde is renowned for.

This wine is sourced from the family’s vineyard along the Opawa River, where 14 hectares of vines, including Sauvignon Blanc, grow in fertile loam on north-facing slopes at 120 metres elevation, just under two miles from the sea. The coastal influence and prevailing breezes create a distinct microclimate, cooler than the rest of Marlborough, lending the wines their signature saline edge, lifted aromatics, and refined texture.

In the glass, the 2023 Awatere Sauvignon Blanc is bright and enticing.
