Chenin Blanc is a standout varietal here and thrives whether grown on trellises or as bush vines. The soils and dry land conditions are particularly suited for bush vine cultivation, resulting in small berries bursting with layered flavours, rich colour and soft tannin structures. 33% of the fruit for this wine comes from old, low-yielding bush vines which produce concentrated fruit. The region is enclosed by three mountain ranges between the cool Atlantic Ocean and the warm Klein Karoo. The climate provides an ideal balance for a long hang time and a slower ripening of the grapes. The warm, ample sunshine allows the full development of the grape’s sugars and aromatic flavour, while the cooling influence from the surrounding mountains help retain natural acidity in the grapes, ensuring a fresh and vibrant wine profile.

The Breedekloof Valley is surrounded by steep mountain slopes and the meandering Breede River which flows through the wide fertile valley. Breedekloof lies to the west of Worcester, with the Slanghoek Mountains marking its western border and the Badsberg Mountain dividing the Breedekloof area in two. The mountains have a moderating effect on the climate, with mountain shadows providing respite for the vines from the hot sun, by shortening the days and bringing cooler nights. These diurnal temperature differences create a long, slow ripening period, which results in ripe flavours and natural balancing acidity.

2022 Pinot Noir Gran Reserva, Viña Echeverría

2020 ‘The Black’ Shiraz ‘Winemakers Reserve’, Berton Vineyard

The palate is full-flavoured and intense with rich plum, blueberry and mocha notes. The tannins are ripe and dense imparting great structure and length to the palate.
Predominantly sourced from the vineyards in Padthaway, South Australia, where the soils are sandy loam over clay, formed on old lagoon sediments. These sandy soils lead to poor nutrient and water retention which helps to concentrate the flavours in the fruit. The vines are grown on single wire trellises, ensuring an open canopy. Drip irrigation is used in the vineyards to manage the water supply and reduce evaporation, as water is applied directly above the roots. The fruit was harvested during the cooler nights to retain freshness.

Each vineyard block was harvested when it reached maximum flavour maturity and physiological ripeness.

The complementary qualities from these two terroirs allow the 35-year-old Grenache vines to reveal all their potential: elegance and finesse come from the small yields of 35 hectolitres per hectare and clay-limestone subsoil of the Saint Geniès de Comolas terroir in the Gard, while the round pebbles and clay subsoil of the Travaillan in the Vaucluse impart structure and power to the blend.

£1495Add to BasketErnst Gouws, the jovial patriarch of the Gouws family and winemaker extraordinaire, firmly believes in the French philosophy that the quality of the wine is inextricably linked to the origin of the vineyards and its terroir. Grapes are therefore hand-harvested from site-specific vineyards around the town of Stellenbosch, which is world-famous for producing quality, fruit-driven wines.
This 2022 Pinotage is a classic example of this uniquely South African red wine. It has a bold ruby colour and complementary aromas of wild bramble, ripe plums, exotic spices, baked Christmas cake and dried pears. The exotic spice profile is reminiscent of a trip to a Marrakesh open-air market where the spice aromas linger and infuse everything. The robust, yet ripe tannins, bolster the structure without the addition of any rough edges. True to its varietal character, the wine ends with lingering flavours of sweetish red berry fruit compote. The wine vinified in the traditional manner and was then matured for nine months in second fill French oak barrels.
The typical fruit sweetness on the finish of Pinotage makes it an ideal partner for spicy Asian-style dishes – think aromatic curries, biryani or peppered squid served with wasabi. The plush red fruit flavours will also compliment ratatouille and oxtail.

2019 Jacquère ‘La Côte’, Domaine Vendange

The Domaine de Vendange estate extends over 10 hectares, planted on south-facing slopes where the local Savoie grape varieties fully express their typicity. The 25- year old Jacquère vines yield 65 hectolitres per hectare. The soils are formed of glacial moraine; they are very young limestone soils made up of limestone scree, with layers of silty clay, which produce elegant, fresh wines. The vines are planted at 400 metres’ elevation, yet despite the altitude and mountainous location, the summers are surprisingly hot. This distinctive microclimate encourages the grapes to reach optimum maturity with concentrated juice, balanced by mountain-cool freshness. The vines are cultivated using integrated agriculture practices, maintaining the greatest respect for terroir and tradition. The focus is on green harvesting with pruning, debudding, trellising and leaf stripping. All grapes are hand-harvested. In 2021, the domain moved into conversion to organic status.
