2017 Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel, Peterson Winery

    £2695

This wine is primarily made with Zinfandel with a little dollop of Petite Sirah, Carignan and Grenache.

The Dry Creek blend, is a wine which reflects the overall Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel terroir, as opposed to a single-vineyard character. The grapes come from five carefully selected vineyards -Funsten, Bradford Mountain Estate, Bernier, Forchini, and the West vineyards, which are located throughout the appellation. Each vineyard has its distinctive soil type and microclimate, providing a cross-section of Dry Creek Valley typicity.

    2021 Barossa Shiraz, Elderton

    £2695

The 2021 Barossa Shiraz from Elderton is a bold and expressive celebration of one of Australia’s most iconic wine styles, shaped by the unique character of the Barossa Valley’s diverse terroir. Grapes are sourced from the estate’s three distinct vineyard sites, Greenock, Nuriootpa, and Craneford.  Each parcel contributes its own signature to the final blend, resulting in a wine of exceptional depth, energy, and balance.

The 2021 vintage was a standout year in the Barossa, and this Shiraz reflects its excellence with stunning clarity. In the glass, it opens with alluring aromas of red liquorice, spiced plum, and a whisper of earthiness. On the palate, a core of vibrant red fruits is layered with gamey undertones and lifted by a touch of clove spice, adding intrigue and complexity.

The Greenock fruit brings a vivid bouquet and punchy tannins, while Nuriootpa contributes plush texture and sweet-spiced fruit. From Craneford, higher elevation and leaner soils add freshness and finesse. The result is a Shiraz with juicy, finely structured tannins, a seamless mid-palate, and a long, spice-laced finish.

Rich yet poised, this wine is a powerful expression of Elderton’s craft and the Barossa’s world-renowned Shiraz pedigree – ready to impress now, with the structure to reward cellaring for 10 years.

Planted at a density of 5,600 vines per hectare, the vines are pruned according to the single Guyot method which ensures low yields of approximately 40 hectolitres per hectare. The soils are made up of a high proportion of heavy clay- approximately 30%, which is renowned for its cooling properties and water retention for the vine, as well as for producing bold wines from the Sangiovese grape. The vineyard is managed sustainably.

    2016 Tinta Barocca, Momento

    £2750

Cherries, cassis, roses and cinnamon joined by porcini mushroom and soy make this an alluring and complex nose added to by the ripe phenolic grip and textured coating palate. The balance between lifted and bright primary red fruit notes and that savoury gravitas mimics high-end Pinot Noir. Tightly wound and complex, this wine can age beyond 2025.

2014 ‘Cariñena’ Huaso de Sauzal, Bodegas El Viejo Almacén de Sauzal

    £2750

Renan Cancino is one of Chile’s most sought-after viticulturists, and while he has made his name for tending vines, his wine production under the Huaso de Sauza brand is also turning heads. Cancino is a natural winemaker whose philosophy is making wines how they were always made historically in Chile – naked. Everything is done the traditional way here: vines are worked by hand, the vineyards are worked by draft horse, and there has never been any use of irrigation or chemicals.

Cariñena is made from Carignan grafted onto free-standing País rootstock on granitic soils in the town of Sauzal.  Cariñena is a rustic wine with expressive aromas of violet, rose petal, oak, smoke and mushroom.  The palate is brimming with flavours of cherry, strawberry, raspberry, liquorice and anise.   The finish is mouthwatering, like a mountain breeze!

“I have never seen such an artisanal and true to tradition way of making wines. The nose is a clean, focused and pure expression of the grape, with the violets and earthy, slightly rustic aromas. No sulfur is ever used at the winery, yet the wines are so clean and pure that it’s hard to believe. The palate is medium-bodied with some earthy, slightly grainy tannins and with great acidity. This is more serious, closed than the Garnacha, but at a similar, very high-quality level. Simply unbelievable. 5,000 bottles produced.”  93 Luis Gutierrez – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

2016 Directors`Cut Cabernet Sauvignon, Heartland Wines

    £2750

Made by Ben Glaetzer from 70+ year old vines this wine is Heartland’s most powerful expression of Langhorne Creek’s classic varietals. Only the best fruit makes the Directors’ Cut.

The 2016 vintage of Directors’ Cut Cabernet Sauvignon gives a very clear understanding of the power and finesse of Langhorne Creek. Here the fruit of old vines are showcased by Ben Glaetzer’s refined winemaking and matured in the finest oak to bring the intensity of the Cabernet Sauvignon to the forefront. Look for delicate floral and herbal notes to act as a counterpoint to the raw majesty of the fruit.

Ben reckons this might be the finest vintage he has ever seen from Langhorne Creek. Only time will tell. Harvest was more generous than the previous few years, with above-average quantity and quality. Total degree days were up from the last three years, with wonderful ripeness levels recorded leading to amazing fruit intensity. This may supersede the 2012 vintage for overall quality and has led to a very happy winemaker.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2017-superheroe-xose-lois-sebio/">2017 ‘Superheroe’, Xosé Lois Sebio</a> Red Wine

    2017 ‘Superheroe’, Xosé Lois Sebio

    £2795

The ‘Superheroe’ from Xosé Lois Sebio is a layered fragrant blend highlighting notes of violet, blackberry, redcurrant and plums, combined with subtle hints of black pepper and mineral tones. Elegant and expansive on the palate, offering concentrated fruit, fine tannins with a balancing freshness. The rich yet vibrant finish is wonderfully intense and long.

This wine is from the DO Ribeiro, which means ‘River Bank’ in Galician, as it is located along the Miño river and its tributaries, in Galicia, North West Spain. A blend of indigenous varieties, the vines range from 40 to 70 years old. These vines are low yielding and produce small, concentrated, flavoursome berries. Planted at an altitude of 150 to 350 metres above sea-level, the vines are free-standing and trained with a stake in the traditional manner, at a density of 1.25 x 1.25 metres. The soils are clay with schist, the latter imparting mineral tones to the wine. The 35% of ‘other grapes’ in the blend is a field blend of Ferrol, Souson, Brancellao, Bastardo, Caiño Longo, Caiño da Terra, Carabuñeira and Tinta Marela. The grapes are grown mixed together in the same parcel which was planted between 70 to 90 years ago in the traditional manner at the time. The grapes are manually harvested simultaneously with each variety offering a unique characteristic to the blend.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2021-amativo-cantele/">2022 Amativo, Cantele</a> Red Wine

    2022 Amativo, Cantele

    £2795

While Cantele’s approach to grape growing and winemaking is rooted in the traditions of Salento viticulture, it doesn’t mean that the current generation of the Cantele family doesn’t continue to experiment and push the boundaries of southern Italian winemaking.

One of its most critically acclaimed projects has been AMATIVO, a wine made from a blend of two of Puglia’s most important red grape varieties: Negroamaro and Primitivo. And the name of the wine, like the blend, is a composite of the grapes that go into it: AMA from the amaro in Negroamaro and TIVO from Primitivo.

An “international-style” wine created by blending two native grapes from Puglia, the flavour profile of this cuvée gets its earthiness from the Negroamaro and its rich fruit character from the Primitivo. While the Negroamaro imparts freshness and just the right amount of tannic structure, the Primitivo gives the wine balance through its rich red fruit flavour.

This is fabulous cool climate shiraz, that is achingly drinkable and great value for money.   The Peninsula label represents the first tier in the Paringa Estate range and are sourced from the Estate managed vineyards in Red Hill, and from a few other carefully selected vineyards around the Peninsula. These wines are an exceptional expression of the Mornington Peninsula style, with an emphasis on lively fruit.

In recent years Paringa has renewed its focus in ensuring the Peninsula range over-delivers on quality and we love the quote from the great James Halliday: “The quality of these wines are often equal to many other vineyards best”

In the glass, a bouquet of spicy blackberry fruit along with lifted floral viognier aromatics lead onto a fruit-driven palate of black fruits, black pepper and fine-grained tannins and silky texture.  A medium-bodied wine with texture and power but with a fineness that reflects its cool climate origin.
