    2018 Avaton, Gerovassiliou

    £2950

Avaton is a luscious blend of three Greek indigenous varietals, where ripe dark fruits combine with notes of raisin, coffee, cacao and a hint of spice. Perfumed and polished, this smooth, medium-bodied wine delivers sweet and sour notes of black plum, with depth and spice leading to a dry finish.  The grapes (Limnio, Mavrotragano and Mavroudi) are fermented in open oak casks, then aged 15 months in oak barrels.

At Ktima Gerovassiliou, the single, private 74-hectare vineyard is cultivated with great care and enthusiasm, which leads to constant research and experimentation with Greek and international varieties. New technological advances blend well with tradition throughout the vine growing and vinification processes to produce high-quality wines that carry all the distinct characteristics of the terroir of Epanomi. The climate in the region of Epanomi is Mediterranean with mild winters and hot summers, tempered by sea breezes. The vineyard is surrounded on three sides by the sea, which is three kilometres away, while its west side faces the Thermaic Gulf, Mount Olympus and the beaches of Pieria. The vines are grown in soils which are mainly sandy with a few clayey substrates and calcareous rocks. It is rich in sea fossils, as the surrounding hilly area was formed by sea deposits.

2021 Omaka Reserve Pinot Noir, Saint Clair

    £2995

The Reserve wines from Saint Clair represent the estate’s pinnacle wines – the best of the best.   This 2021 has concentrated flavours of black cherry, blackcurrant, Kalamata olive, and perfumed wildflowers, that lead to an elegant palate with a structure reminiscent of finely powdered cocoa. The finish is long incorporating freshly roasted coffee beans, toasty oak and spice.

Ageing potential: This wine is drinking beautifully now or with careful cellaring will mature into a more complex wine that can be enjoyed for the next 8 to 10 years or beyond.

This vineyard site has been the foundation for some of Saint Clair’s finest wines. This is the vineyard where Saint Clair Family Estate first discovered the fruit to make their flagship Saint Clair Wairau Reserve Sauvignon Blanc. The fruit is sourced from a single vineyard in the lower Wairau Valley. The Block One site was previously part of the Wairau flood plain and is renowned for its deep, highly fertile, free-draining soils, which have been built up over time and help to produce the intensity of flavour in the resulting wine. The vineyard has a flat profile and is situated approximately three metres above sea level. It is now protected from flooding by a stopbank. Located in a slightly cooler site than the majority of the Marlborough Valley, the vines have a slower annual ripening period. The fruit is carefully monitored during the ripening stage and is harvested during the cooler evenings, at maximum flavour maturity and physiological ripeness.

    2019 Grenache, Illimis

    £2995

We love Grenache at Wine Republic and were very excited when Illimis announced they had produced one!   Winemaker and owner of Illimis, Lucinda Heyns has crafted an exceptional example of Grenache from a bush vine vineyard located in Wellington which is just north of Paarl in the Western Cape.   The vineyard has shale soil with pockets of schist that Grenache loves and it delivers a wine with fine, chalky tannins, beautiful aromas of wild strawberries, lavender and rose petals.  The palate is silky and supple with flavours of cherry, minerals, dried berries and wild herbs that lead into a long finish.

2022 Barbera D’Asti Cipressi ‘Nizza’ DOCG, Michele Chiarlo

    £2995

An exceptional Barbera showing wonderful clarity and elegance, with aromas of red berries, ripe cherry, wild raspberry and sweet notes of tobacco. Complex and structured on the palate with a rounded, silky texture and pleasing savoury finish.

The grapes are grown in the six-hectare vineyard of Tenuta la Court in the commune of Castelnuovo Calcea. Castelnuovo Calcea is one of the 18 designated communes within the appellation of Nizza DOCG. Originally a subzone of the Barbera d’Asti DOCG, Nizza became a separate DOCG in 2014. The Guyot trained vines are planted at a density of 5,000 vines per hectare and are grown on southeast to southwest facing slope at an elevation of 230 to 280 metres above sea level. The soils are known as ‘Astiane Sands’ and consist of calcareous clay marl of sedimentary marine origin, with a good presence of lime and sand and are rich in microelements, in particular magnesium. The vines are very low yielding with excess bunches thinned at the end of the summer in order to concentrate the flavours in the remaining grapes.

2021 Morellino di Scansano Riserva DOCG, Fattoria Le Pupille

    £2995

The 2021 Morellino di Scansano Riserva DOCG is a striking expression of Fattoria Le Pupille’s heritage and the untamed beauty of Tuscany’s Maremma region. As the first wine ever produced by the estate, this Riserva continues to embody the soul of its origins, anchored in ripe Sangiovese and the wild, sun-drenched landscapes that define its terroir.

The nose opens with a deep and complex bouquet: ripe forest berries, blood orange, and maraschino cherry rise from the glass, woven together with nuances of aromatic Mediterranean herbs. Subtle yet evocative notes of liquorice, black pepper, and a touch of dark chocolate add layers of intrigue and sensuality.

On the palate, this Riserva is bold and expressive, yet remarkably poised. A structured, fleshy core is balanced by silky tannins and a vibrant line of fresh acidity, delivering power and elegance in equal measure. The finish is long and resonant, leaving a lingering impression of rhubarb and myrtle, a nod to the rugged flora of its native landscape.

A wine of depth, intensity, and undeniable charm, the 2021 Riserva is both a tribute to tradition and a showcase of refined craftsmanship—perfect for savouring now or cellaring for added complexity.

The Campo alle Comete winery is located at the foot of the Castagneto Carducci hill in Bolgheri. The oldest vines are planted around the cellar surrounded by the Mediterranean bushland. 2021 Gimblett Gravels Syrah, Craggy Range

    £2995

A Syrah showing tremendous aromatic lift, with notes of lavender and sweet cherry rising from the glass. The structured palate shows wonderful balance and concentration.

Hawke’s Bay’s Gimblett Gravels winegrowing district lies on the ancient bed of the Ngaruroro River, which changed course in 1867 to expose the soils for possible viticulture. The relatively low altitude and proximity to the sea yet sheltered from the direct effect of the sea breeze, creates a temperate maritime climate. This location, altitude, and the stony soil’s warming influence make it the warmest site in Hawke’s Bay. The lack of excessive heat in the Gimblett Gravels is also a critical factor as it means the aromatic characters in the fruit, which contribute to the floral notes, are retained. The soils are composed of small to medium-sized greywacke stones interspersed with layers of silt and sand down to a depth of at least 40 metres. The stones on the surface absorb sunlight and heat during the day and then radiate heat at night, enhancing the vine’s ripening capacity. The stony soil structure allows for very rapid drainage after rainfall events; the low water-holding ability the vine’s growth to be controlled. The soils in this locality produce rich, ripe, yet elegantly structured red wines with a distinctive mineral, hot stone and fine dusty character, affectionately known as ‘Gimblett Dust’.
