2018 Cabernet Franc Mini Ediciones, Finca Decero

    £3775

Finca Decero is a world-class wine producer located in the Agrelo sub-appellation of Luján de Cuyo in the northwestern part of the province of Mendoza.  Their famed Remolinos Vineyard derives its name from the little whirlwind spiral formations of soil which form in the afternoon as the gentle wind lifts the dry soil from the paths of the vineyard into swaying ‘dust devils’.  This natural phenomenon draws the attention of our overly protective Lechuza owls in the vineyard who sometimes take flight seemingly to chase them away!

2018 is a stellar vintage in Mendoza and will be long remembered.

The 2018 Decero Mini Ediciones Cabernet Franc is one of their ‘rare varieties & limited edition’ wines. Of this vintage, only 7,192 bottles were made. The wine shows nuances of pepper, graphite and plum notes with fresh aromatics and taut acidity resulting in a well-structured, elegant Cabernet Franc with great potential for ageing.

2018 Poggio Valente IGT, Fattoria Le Pupille

    £3795

Poggio Valente is a cru vineyard located in Pereta, near Scansano and was purchased by Elisabetta Geppetti in 1996. The focus of the project here was on the Sangiovese grape and within a few years the wine became another significant milestone with its expression of Maremma’s terroir.

Matured for 18 months in new oak Poggio Valente is a medium ruby red in colour. The nose shows hints of red and black fruits with distinct aromas of blackberry, cherry and black plum, following notes of tobacco, nutmeg and forest floor. The palate is elegant and balanced, with sweet and silky tannins. Perfect served with fillet of beef and green pepper or polenta with wild boar – one of the classic dishes of Maremma’s cuisine.

    2019 Rosehill Shiraz, Mount Pleasant

    £3795

Mount Pleasant, based in the Hunter Valley, was established in 1921 by the legendary winemaker Maurice O’Shea, from 16.3 hectares of adjoining parcels of land, which he named Mount Pleasant.

An elegant and refined Shiraz, with an abundance of raspberry and cranberry fruit layered with perfumed notes of violet, spice and plum. The red fruits drive through the palate with intensity and focus supported by subtle oak.

The Shiraz vines were planted in 1946 in a single vineyard plot named ‘Rosehill’. These low-yielding, old vines have deep and complex root systems. Maurice O’Shea purchased the land during World War II and the site is now regarded as one of the elite vineyards of the Hunter Valley. Once the site of volcanic activity, the Rosehill Vineyard is located at one of the Hunter Valley’s highest elevations. This 22-hectare parcel of volcanic loam soil, with patches of limestone and eroded basalt, is fertile and ideal for producing full-flavoured red grapes. O’Shea devoted it to solely planting Shiraz. The vineyard is cultivated using sustainable techniques, such as employing mulch to nourish the vines and growing cover crops to increase the biodiversity in the soil.

2023 Saint Georges Zinfandel Old Vines, Birichino

    £3795

Birichino is a boutique winery based in Santa Cruz, California, renowned for crafting expressive, terroir-driven wines from old vines and lesser-known varietals. Founded in 2008 by Alex Krause and John Locke, both seasoned winemakers with extensive experience in California and abroad, Birichino (meaning “mischievous” in Italian) embodies a spirit of creativity and exploration.

On the nose, vibrant aromas of ripe cherry, boysenberry, and cola intermingle with delicate floral notes and a whisper of candied violet. The palate is lively and precise, offering layered red and blue fruit flavours wrapped in fine tannins and lifted by bright acidity. Subtle accents of allspice, liquorice, and cracked pepper build through the mid-palate, leading to a long, energetic finish that echoes the wine’s spicy and mineral nuances.

The historic vineyard from which this comes from, planted in 1922 by an Italian bootlegger, is rooted in gravelly loam soils and has been continuously farmed by the Besson family since 1925. The proximity to Monterey Bay, just 12 miles west, imparts a cooling marine influence, contributing to the wine’s vibrant acidity and nuanced flavour profile.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2018-south-coast-pinot-noir-lismore/">2018 South Coast Pinot Noir, Lismore</a> Red Wine

2018 South Coast Pinot Noir, Lismore

    £3800

An elegant Pinot Noir delivering a complex bouquet of crushed rose petals, wild jasmine and fresh French herbs. The palate shows beautiful purity with layered red fruits, cranberry, raspberry, silky tannins and a long, savoury finish.

This wine was made from Pinot Noir from 2 regions, 70% of the grapes came from Stanford, Walker Bay and 30% from Elgin, both in the cool climate region Cape South Coast. The vines are all Burgundian, clone 115. The Stanford vineyard is close to the southernmost tip of Africa and is located in one of South Africa’s coolest wine-producing regions. The maritime vineyard enjoys a long ripening season, because of the strong cooling winds that are prevalent in the summer. This microclimate is ideal for creating a long hang time, concentrating the flavours in the berries while retaining natural acidity levels. Elgin is situated at 400 metres above sea level and ripens even later than the coastal vineyard. The vines here, planted in shale and clay soils, produce fleshier fruit, adding weight to the blend.

2016 Martelo Reserva Rioja, Torre de Oña

    £3800

The 2015 Finca Martelo Reserva is a juicy wine, thrilling the mouth with plentiful red and black fruit. A wise and careful ageing process in wood is appreciated in its seductive and well-balanced character and fresh sensations. It makes no attempt to hide the power of its modern profile but the character of a traditional wine and other more evolved touches are never far away. A top-quality Reserva wine produced by a winery steeped in expertise creating classic Rioja wines.

Head winemaker Julio Saenz refers to it as “our little Burgundy” because of how closely it represents this unique location. In fact, the wine itself is a field blend, 95% Tempranillo with 5% other varieties including Mazuelo, Garnacha, and even Viura. The chalk soils and 80-year-old vines at Torre de Oña produce a fuller, riper style of Rioja, while the high altitude and Atlantic influence in Rioja Alavesa keeps the wine fresh and elegant. This style is complemented by the use of 20% French oak and shorter maturation, alongside La Rioja Alta’s ultra-traditional methods such as racking by hand.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2016-zinfandel-bradford-mountain-estate-vineyard-peterson-winery/">2019 Zinfandel ‘Bradford Mountain Estate Vineyard’, Peterson Winery</a> Red Wine

2019 Zinfandel ‘Bradford Mountain Estate Vineyard’, Peterson Winery

    £3800

This Mountain-grown Zinfandel opens in the glass with tempting notes of opulent dark berries, spicy black pepper and a rich mineral essence, underpinned by beautifully integrated oak nuances through to a long, elegant finish

The grapes are ‘Estate Grown’ from the Bradford Mountain Estate vineyard. Overlooking the western edge of Dry Creek Valley, the vineyard spans six and a half hectares on the very top of the 385-metre peak that Fred cleared and planted in the 1980s. The well-drained, red-clay soil, combined with sunny days and cool nights, produces small, intensely flavoured grapes. This wine encapsulates all of the best qualities found in mountain-grown Zinfandels from the Dry Creek Valley appellation: the poorer soils and cooler nights harness and preserve more of the bright acidity and freshness in the grapes. More sunlight hours at the higher elevation means thicker-skinned fruit which translates as darker, richer fruit. The key characteristics of mountain-grown Zinfandel are that it has a peppery quality and more intense black fruit characteristics.

2021 Milla Cala , Viña VIK

    £3800

A signature blend of all the varieties on the VIK estate, the red fruit notes from the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot intermingle perfectly with the black fruit and spice of the Carmenère, all underpinned by a mineral hint of Cabernet Franc and the violet nuances of Syrah.

Situated within the valley’s interior, the vineyard benefits from a rich tapestry of diverse terroirs and microclimates. Each parcel features unique exposures, tempered by coastal breezes, which intricately crafts complexity in the resulting wines. The vineyards are planted across 12 small valleys, totalling 327 hectares. More than 6,000 soil analyses were conducted to match clonal selection of rootstock and varieties. The soil types include colluvial, alluvial, sand, clay, and gravel stone, each imparting a distinctive characteristic to the resulting blend. Milla Calla incorporates all the varieties on the estate. The vines are planted in the Colchaguilla, La Feria, Boqueron plots at high density, of 10,000 vines per hectare, with six bunches per vine. 50% of the vineyards are massale selection and 50% are from carefully selected clones. The vines are sustainably cultivated and hand-harvested at optimum maturity.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2018-old-vines-trousseau-from-patagonia-matias-riccitelli/">2018 Old Vines Trousseau From Patagonia, Matias Riccitelli</a> Red Wine

2018 Old Vines Trousseau From Patagonia, Matias Riccitelli

    £3875

Made from 100% Trousseau this elegant wine offers aromatic complexity with wild red-berried fruits and mineral notes complemented by spicy, floral hues. Refreshing and silky, this is light but with good structure and a long finish.

The Trousseau grapes come from the traditional vine-growing sites of Allen and Ing Heuergo in the province of Rio Negro, Patagonia, approximately halfway between the Andes Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. Situated on the 39° latitude south, the sunlight exposure is more intense than in northern areas, but at this latitude, the nights are much colder. This daily diurnal temperature range is excellent for the production of quality grapes; the nightly cooling-off extends the ripening period, allowing the grapes to develop rich varietal characteristics while retaining balancing acidity. The low yielding vines were planted at the beginning of the 1970s and they are ungrafted allowing for complete interaction between the silty soils and the vine. The vines are cultivated naturally following organic principles resulting in wines that are expressive of the terroir and their varietal characteristics. The grapes are hand-harvested once they have reached optimal maturity. The long-forgotten variety of Trousseau is a dark-skinned variety that originated in Jura, France and is a synonym for Bastardo.

2017 ‘The McRae Wood’ Shiraz, Jim Barry

    £3895

This Shiraz honours the vision of pioneer Clare Valley winemaker Jim Barry. In 1964, Jim purchased 28 hectares of prime land from Duncan McRae Wood and planted his first vineyard with Shiraz. It was an inspired choice of both grape variety and location.

This wine displays lovely red and purple tones in the glass.  Red and purple fruits carry onto the palate supported by a rich, earthy undertone and fine silky tannins giving the wine terrific structure, great length and persistent flavour.  Rich, vibrant aromas of blackcurrant and briary fruits with hints of vanillin oak and spice.

Made using the ‘Jim Barry’ method and as such can be enjoyed upon release, but would equally benefit from cellaring to allow the wine to show some mature characteristics that come with age.

The fruit for this wine comes from 3.28 hectares of vineyards, including one Volnay plot by the name of ‘Les Longbois’ and various other sites within Puligny-Montrachet. The Domaine has practised organic viticulture since 1995 and was certified organic in 2012. Since 2005, it has also converted to biodynamic viticulture.
