  2019 Nivarius ‘Edicion Limitada’, Palacios Vinos de Finca

  Bodegas Nivarius specialises in the production of white wines from cool-climate vineyards in Rioja.  This wine represents the perfect blend of the terroir and the cool-climate region, with its warm days and cool nights prolonging the ripening period and encouraging aromatic richness. The Viura grapes come from the sandy soils of the Najerilla, and the limestone soils of the Sonsierra, and are blended with Maturana Blanca from the Iregua Valley, grown in sandy soils. Maturana Blanca is an ancient native variety with small clusters and small, elliptical grapes which produces vibrant, tangy wines characterised by high, natural acidity.

  In the glass it has an aromatic and complex bouquet of baked apple, floral and balsamic notes, layered with nutty tones and a hint of minerality. The palate is fresh, rounded and balanced, with lovely texture and finishes with stone fruits and a touch of almond.

  Nivarius, meaning ‘snow-drift’, takes its name from the common sight of the snowy blanket which covers the vineyards in winter.

  2021 Hunter Valley Semillon, Brokenwood

  Established in 1970 by Tony Albert, John Beeston and wine critic James Halliday, Brokenwod has evolved from a weekend venture for hobby winemakers into one of the Hunter’s leading estates renowned for producing some of Australia’s most long-lived Semillons.

  Brilliant water-like colour with a faint greenish tinge to the edges. The nose displays punchy aromas of lime zest, lemon and Granny Smith apple followed by some flinty mineral notes. Crunchy lime and green apple fruits are underpinned by crisp, lemony acidity with wet steel and mineral characters flowing onto the zesty aftertaste.

  A flirtatious, refreshing, gimme more Pinot Gris. A collision of white pepper, daffodils and summer fruits, with just a peck on the cheek of acidity. This Gris is all about mouthfeel – it’s got depth, viscosity and richness while staying deliciously clean and deceptively moreish. A classic, ticks-all-your-boxes Gris, with a touch of savoury, steely notes in the background – textbook Neudorf aromatic.  ‘Tiritiri’ means to grow, cultivate or share in Reo Maori.

  2020 Sauvignon Blanc ‘Barrique’, Saint Clair

  The wine displays complex aromas of green coffee bean, vanilla pod and maple syrup are complemented by notes of wildflowers, crushed herbs and just a hint of gunflint. The palate is rich and unctuous with layers of ripe papaya, nectarine, cocoa powder and toasted hazelnut with hints of red berry and cassis.

  The grapes come from three rows of vines in one of Saint Clair’s best vineyards in the lower Wairau sub-region of Marlborough. The vineyard soils are nutrient-rich and free draining. The maritime climate and close proximity to the sea create a high diurnal temperature difference resulting in a long ripening period, concentrating the fruit flavours while retaining refreshing acidity. The fruit is left to hang a week longer than the fruit for Saint Clair’s traditional Sauvignon Blanc. The grapes are hand-harvested, with only the highest quality bunches being selected.

  2022 Greco Di Tufo DOCG, Feudi di San Gregorio

  This wine is made from the wonderful Greco grape that is grown on the famous Tufo (volcanic) soils that are believed to lend the wine its perfume and mineral complexity.  This 2020 vintage has a rich and powerfully aromatic nose reminiscent of apricot, peach and tropical melon that leads to a creamy palate, harmoniously balanced with a refreshing minerality.

  The beautiful Feudi di San Gregorio vineyards are spread out over lush and gentle hills in Sorbo Serpico, approximately an hour from Naples and Mount Vesuvius. The soils are uniquely volcanic, sandstone and marl. Each vineyard is closely monitored with a meteorological station and combined with the technologies of the new state-of-the-art wine cellar; they ensure that each vintage comes as close to perfection as possible. The soil in the vineyard is predominantly chalky Tufo soil, which imparts wonderful elegance to the resulting wine.

  2017 Barrel Fermented Sauvignon Blanc, Lismore

  Lismore Estate is based in Greyton within the Overberg region of the Western Cape of South Africa.  It’s here with the Sonderend mountains as a backdrop that winemaker & proprietor Samantha O’Keefe makes her fabulous wines.   ‘ I had a farm in Africa….’  The opening line of Karen Blixen’s classic memoir Out Of Africa comes to mind when you hear Samantha’s amazing story.  A native Californian, Berkeley educated, Sam realised her dream and bought a mountain in Africa. She then sold the bottom half to finance vine planting in the top half!

  This 2017 barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc is a full-bodied, elegant and beautifully balanced wine. Floral notes of passionflower, fynbos (natural shrubland), combine with guava, gooseberry and pear on the palate along with an underlying minerality, imparting its signature style. A true expression of this unique terroir and its equally unique winemaker.

  We love barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc at Wine Republic and this beauty is made in an “oxidative” style using old 500-litre barrels for 70% of the fermentation and maturation bringing forward richness, intense fruit and complexity. 30% of the wine is fermented and aged in 1500-litre concrete egg tanks to enhance the rich palate texture and minerality. In both the barrels and the eggs, extended less contact contribute further to the rounder mouthfeel and creaminess of this elegantly textured wine.

  2020 Wonderwall Chardonnay, Field Recordings

  I secretly think we all miss those big luscious, oaky Californian Chardonnays, the ones before they all got expensive and over-the-top.

  The Wonderwall 2020 vintage makes a strong first impression with a nose full of pears and clementines. The palate is full of summery notes of ripe stone fruit, citrus and pie crust.  As with all the Wonderwall Chardonnays from previous vintages, it has that irresistible mouthwatering feeling that invites the next sip.  Drink now and to 2026.

  As a vine nursery fieldman, Andrew Jones has spent many hours exploring vineyards, planning, planting, and chatting with farmers all over the Central Coast. He began spotting more and more interesting and overlooked vineyards – often rocky, wilder sites located closer to the Pacific, farmed mindfully by clients who have become friends over many years.  This Chardonnay is sourced from Edna Valley.

  2020 Riesling Spitzer Federspiel, Weingut Johann Donabaum

  An enchanting wine delivering distinctive aromas of peach and apricot. Crisp, with pure varietal character echoed on the palate, this refreshing wine has an excellent structure and a lively finish. Lovely Riesling expression.

  The grapes come from the Spitz vineyard in Western Wachau. The vines are grown on steep hillside terraces which make up several vineyards in the Spitzer Graben. The vines are planted with a south western orientation. Cooling breezes help to keep the climate temperate. The soils are very sandy and have high heat retention properties. The soil’s composition is the result of weathering of the local rocks and it is dominated by pegmatite and calc-silicate gneisses, which have low water retention and help to impart structure to the resulting wine.

  Aromatically the 2022 vintage stands out for its marked varietal character and intensity, with white fruit notes -golden delicious apple and ripe pear- as well as stone fruit, particularly apricot, and hints of lemon peel.   Isabel Estate is located just outside of Renwick village in the Wairau Valley at the heart of Marlborough’s wine region. The site benefits from all the climate characteristics that make the Marlborough renowned including extended sunshine hours combined with a long, cool growing season.

  The Chardonnay grapes for this wine come from a vineyard planted in1980, which is renowned for producing intensely concentrated grapes that result in a wine of elegance, complexity, depth and class.

  In the glass this 2020 Chardonnay delivers an intensely concentrated wine of elegance, complexity, depth and class. Characters of white nectarine complemented by intriguing gun smoke and flint, vanilla bean and French oak toastiness will delight even the fussiest of Chardonnay devotees.

  2021 Block 3 Sauvignon Blanc ’43 Degrees’, Saint Clair

  This Sauvignon Blanc is distinctively Marlborough with green notes of gooseberry, nettle and blackcurrant bud. The fresh, vibrant palate layers blackcurrant with tropical passion fruit, white peach and a mineral, slightly salty richness which leads to a long, lingering finish.

  The fruit was sourced from the fertile, deep, free-draining silt-loam soils of the lower Wairau Valley. The rows are planted north-east to south-west at a 43-degree angle rather than the typical north to south. This leads to slightly greener characters in grapes on the south facing side and more tropical characters in grapes on the north-facing side. The resulting wine is multi-dimensional and complex. The site is cooler than some other areas of the valley and hence slower to ripen. The distinguishing flavour is of crushed herbs – which is one often associated with the coastal Awatere region. Careful monitoring during ripening and harvesting in the cool of the evening ensures fruit of maximum flavour maturity and physiological ripeness.

  2020 `Rocking Horse` Cape White Blend, Thorne & Daughters

  This wine is Thorne & Daughters principal and most well-known wine and for good reason, as it’s delicious!  2020 is the first vintage in which Semillon has dominated the blend. On the nose, it reveals aromas of hay, yellow plum, kumquat, and bay leaf, with saline undertones. The palate is broad and supple with notes of glossy stone fruit and subtle gunflint, finishing with a clean line of acidity

  The grapes for the Rocking Horse were sourced from a number of very carefully selected growers around the Western Cape. The Roussanne and the Chardonnay come from younger trellised vines, with an average age of 14 years planted in Stellenbosch and Paardeberg mountain on a combination of clay and decomposed granite. Semillon Blanc from Franschhoek, Clairette Blanche from Stellenbosch and Chenin Blanc from Paardeberg add depth and textural complexity to this Cape white blend as they are sourced from old, low-yielding bush vines estimated to be approximately 40 years old.

  2020 Province Chardonnay, Astrolabe

   The Astrolabe Marlborough Chardonnay is made from grapes grown at Astrolabe Farm Vineyard in the lower Wairau Valley, Wrekin Vineyard in the Southern Valleys and Dashwood Corner in the Awatere Valley.

  In the glass, this wine has aromas of ripe melon and dried stone fruits with vanilla and butter notes and a subtle mealiness.  The palate has a very elegant texture with stone fruit, vanilla creaminess, pleasing weight and a long, dry and mineral finish.  This wine is already drinking well, but it
  will continue to evolve, increasing in complexity and roundness over several years.  Drink now to 2028.  Pairs well with poultry, creamy sauces, miso, sesame, truffles or delicate mushrooms.

  2021 Sauvignon Blanc Pioneer Block 1 Foundation, Saint Clair

  This Sauvignon Blanc is a powerful and intense wine with an aromatic nose of white currant, capsicum and fragrant tropical fruit with a hint of thyme. Luscious ripe blackcurrant and lime flavours envelop the palate, which has a chalky texture. This is a pure and focussed Sauvignon Blanc with a long, lingering finish.  Drinking beautifully now and best enjoyed over the next two to five years.

  This vineyard site has been the foundation for some of Saint Clair’s finest wines. This is the vineyard where Saint Clair Family Estate first discovered the fruit to make their flagship Saint Clair Wairau Reserve Sauvignon Blanc. The fruit is sourced from a single vineyard in the lower Wairau Valley. The Block One site was previously part of the Wairau flood plain and is renowned for its deep, highly fertile, free-draining soils, which have been built up over time and help to produce the intensity of flavour in the resulting wine. The vineyard has a flat profile and is situated approximately three metres above sea level. It is now protected from flooding by a stopbank. Located in a slightly cooler site than the majority of the Marlborough Valley, the vines have a slower annual ripening period. The fruit is carefully monitored during the ripening stage and is harvested during the cooler evenings, at maximum flavour maturity and physiological ripeness.
