  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2018-block-3-sauvignon-blanc-43-degrees-saint-clair/">2021 Block 3 Sauvignon Blanc ’43 Degrees’, Saint Clair</a>

2021 Block 3 Sauvignon Blanc ’43 Degrees’, Saint Clair

    £2375

This Sauvignon Blanc is distinctively Marlborough with green notes of gooseberry, nettle and blackcurrant bud. The fresh, vibrant palate layers blackcurrant with tropical passion fruit, white peach and a mineral, slightly salty richness which leads to a long, lingering finish.

The fruit was sourced from the fertile, deep, free-draining silt-loam soils of the lower Wairau Valley. The rows are planted north-east to south-west at a 43-degree angle rather than the typical north to south. This leads to slightly greener characters in grapes on the south facing side and more tropical characters in grapes on the north-facing side. The resulting wine is multi-dimensional and complex. The site is cooler than some other areas of the valley and hence slower to ripen. The distinguishing flavour is of crushed herbs – which is one often associated with the coastal Awatere region. Careful monitoring during ripening and harvesting in the cool of the evening ensures fruit of maximum flavour maturity and physiological ripeness.

    2020 `Rocking Horse` Cape White Blend, Thorne & Daughters

    £2395

This wine is Thorne & Daughters principal and most well-known wine and for good reason, as it’s delicious!  2020 is the first vintage in which Semillon has dominated the blend. On the nose, it reveals aromas of hay, yellow plum, kumquat, and bay leaf, with saline undertones. The palate is broad and supple with notes of glossy stone fruit and subtle gunflint, finishing with a clean line of acidity

The grapes for the Rocking Horse were sourced from a number of very carefully selected growers around the Western Cape. The Roussanne and the Chardonnay come from younger trellised vines, with an average age of 14 years planted in Stellenbosch and Paardeberg mountain on a combination of clay and decomposed granite. Semillon Blanc from Franschhoek, Clairette Blanche from Stellenbosch and Chenin Blanc from Paardeberg add depth and textural complexity to this Cape white blend as they are sourced from old, low-yielding bush vines estimated to be approximately 40 years old.

2021 Sauvignon Blanc Pioneer Block 1 Foundation, Saint Clair

    £2395

This Sauvignon Blanc is a powerful and intense wine with an aromatic nose of white currant, capsicum and fragrant tropical fruit with a hint of thyme. Luscious ripe blackcurrant and lime flavours envelop the palate, which has a chalky texture. This is a pure and focussed Sauvignon Blanc with a long, lingering finish.  Drinking beautifully now and best enjoyed over the next two to five years.

This vineyard site has been the foundation for some of Saint Clair’s finest wines. This is the vineyard where Saint Clair Family Estate first discovered the fruit to make their flagship Saint Clair Wairau Reserve Sauvignon Blanc. The fruit is sourced from a single vineyard in the lower Wairau Valley. The Block One site was previously part of the Wairau flood plain and is renowned for its deep, highly fertile, free-draining soils, which have been built up over time and help to produce the intensity of flavour in the resulting wine. The vineyard has a flat profile and is situated approximately three metres above sea level. It is now protected from flooding by a stopbank. Located in a slightly cooler site than the majority of the Marlborough Valley, the vines have a slower annual ripening period. The fruit is carefully monitored during the ripening stage and is harvested during the cooler evenings, at maximum flavour maturity and physiological ripeness.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2023-estate-white-encruzado-soito/">2023 Estate White’ Encruzado, Soito</a>

    2023 Estate White’ Encruzado, Soito

    £2395

A refreshing, elegant wine from the Encruzado variety, showing complex notes of lemon balm, orange blossom and juicy white fruits, with layers of citrus. Creamy, but beautifully balanced by a crisp finish.

The Dão region is located in Beira, central northern Portugal, flanked by the mountain chains of Caramulo, Montemuro, Buçaco and Estrela, which offer protection from the prevailing winds. Within this basin configuration, there is a wide range of micro-climates strongly influenced by relatively steep valleys carved out by the Mondego, Alva and Dão Rivers and their numerous tributaries. The vineyards range from 200 to 700 metres above sea level, and the white varieties are planted on elevated, terraced slopes, where they benefit from cooler microclimates. The wide diurnal temperature shifts of up to 20°C, ensure the fruit is endowed with ample natural acidity; Dão wines are renowned for their freshness. The soils are granite-dominated sands, with particles of feldspar, quartz and mica which sparkle in the vineyards. They are lean, free-draining and relatively infertile soils, which force the vines to struggle, resulting in complex wines.

    2021 Grenache Blanc, Olifantsberg

    £2400

A unique style of Grenache Blanc which shows delicacy and finesse. Subtle aromas of lime blossom combine with green herbal notes, white peach and quince through to a beautifully balanced and richly textured palate with a saline hint on the finish.

The vineyards are located on the fertile slopes of the Olifantsberg Mountain Range where they endure large diurnal temperature differences and strong winds, at altitudes from 250 to 450 metres above sea level. During the winter the mountain peaks are snow-covered, keeping the vines dormant for longer. Cold winters, coupled with the summer winds, ensure the slow ripening of the grapes, which helps to maintain healthy vines and contributes freshness and elegance to the wines.  The vineyards are farmed in a sustainable manner, helping to maintain the biodiversity within the vineyards and soils

    2016 Chenin/Verdelho, Momento

    £2450
Marelise Niemann, winemaker and owner of Momento thinks that Chenin Blanc without Verdelho is like dancing without music.
Verdelho adds the zing and zest to the blend, giving it that extra twist of freshness, energy and rhythm. The Chenin blanc grapes come from 40-year-old, dry land farmed bush vines in the Swartland, and a 36-year-old vineyard from Bot River, called ‘Langbene’ (Long legs) – named after the unique and extremely long trunks of the vines.  The Verdelho grapes come from Voor-Paardeberg, grown in decomposed granite and clay as well as a vineyard in Bot River grown in Bokkeveld shale. The decomposed granite soils produce a rich, generous and broader palate, while the shale and clay soil from Bot River produces an austere, focused, and texture driven wine. A combination of these two regions, together with the Verdelho that adds the freshness, combine to create a well-balanced wine, both rich and generous and elegant and well-poised, with a mineral focus and bright acidity.

A nose of white peach, lemon rind and jasmine with green melon, green apple and a crystalline, wet stone minerality adding freshness and focus. Crunchy, puckering acidity supports a full-bodied, mouth-coating palate with brioche and tart lemon curd leading to a long, pithy finish.

The steep topography causes the valley to receive less direct sunlight due to the overshadowing mountains, which together with the elevation of 600 to 900m equates to a very cool climate for the valley. is unique terroir produces wines with high natural acidity and upfront aromas. Grapes are harvested much later than other sites in the Western Cape, with harvest usually starting in late February/early March.

    2020 Chardonnay, Zephyr Wines

    £2450

The Glover family were one of the first to plant grapes on their farm in Marlborough’s Dillon’s Point sub-region in 1988. Nineteen years later, led by eldest son Ben, the family launched Zephyr, a range of single vineyard wines from the farm. The name Zephyr means ‘a gentle breeze’. Inspired by the prevailing wind that moderates their vineyards.

This organic single vineyard Chardonnay stands out from the Marlborough crowd for its perfect use of oak barrels and subtle toasty note on the nose. Flinty, complex and with plenty of personality, this is a taut New Zealand chardonnay with citrus, spice and a mealy savoury character.  In short it perfectly expresses the ethereal, aromatic and structural flair of the Dillons Point Sub-Region in Marlborough.

    £2450

A fresh, fragrant blend, with fragrant lemony fruit and herbal notes from the garrigue. Beautifully balanced with rounded fruit underpinned by lovely mineral freshness.

The Domaine Gardiés vineyards nestle in the foothills of Corbières, where the clay- limestone of the scrubland gives this a part of the Domaine’s soil its characteristic finesse. The climate is Mediterranean, the hot, arid summers encouraging the vines to struggle and send their roots deep into the soil in search of nutrients, resulting in complex wines. The low-yielding vines produce 30 hl/ha. The region is characterised by the eight different types of wind blow across the wine growing area and, one day out of three, the mighty Tramontane, a dominating northerly wind, sweeps through the region. These drying winds help keep vineyards in a healthy condition, reducing the need for pest control or other human intervention. Domaine Gardiés is certified organic, the vines are hand-harvested and biodiversity in the vineyard is encouraged.
