  • 2010 Chateau Puy GuilhemRed Wine

    2010 Chateau Puy Guilhem

    £2895

2009 is widely cited as an outstanding vintage. The growing season was almost perfect, with a long, fine, warm summer and crucially, cooler nights which helped to retain balancing acidity. The wines are intensely ripe and rich.  This 2009 Chateau Puy Guilhem is a powerful yet elegant red with ripe berried fruits enhanced by a subtle note of oak spice. Full-bodied, with juicy fruit and an attractive savoury note on the finish.

The appellation of Fronsac is on the right bank close to Saint Emilion. The wines are dominated by Merlot. Château Puyguilhem’s vineyard is situated in an elevated position of the appellation, atop high-quality soil composed of a mix of clay and silt, which imparts structure to the wine. The vineyard is managed sustainably without the use of herbicides. Cover crops of grass are grown between the vines and managed with light tilling.

  • 2009 Shadrach Cabernet Sauvignon, Grant BurgeRed Wine

2009 Shadrach Cabernet Sauvignon, Grant Burge

    £5500

Shadrach is one of the Grant Burge Icon wines that are named in honour of Meshach Burge, the great grandfather of founder Grant Burge who began an enduring family winemaking tradition.  The biblical origins of his name inspired the naming of this wine along with the story that Shadrach, with Abednego and Meshach, were cast into the fiery furnace by King Nebuchadnezzar in 600BC.

Shadrach represents the best Cabernet Sauvignon from Grant Burge Wines and this 2009 vintage is a blend of 38% Barossa and 62% Eden Valley fruit.

The palate is round and luscious with flavours following from the nose of blackberry, ripe plums with complex layers of chocolate, coffee and a little spice and meatiness. A powerful flavoursome wine, with elegant French oak tannins and displaying exceptional length.

  • 2009 Pepper Bridge Vineyard Apogee, L’Ecole No.41Red Wine

    2009 Pepper Bridge Vineyard Apogee, L’Ecole No.41

    £6950

L’Ecole Nº 41 has been producing premium, handcrafted varietal wines in the Walla Walla Valley since 1983 in the historic Frenchtown School in Lowden, Washington.

Apogee is an iconic Washington State Bordeaux blend and is one of 3 incredible single vineyard wines from L’Ecole No.41, the other 2 being Perigee and Ferguson. (see bottom of this page) Apogee comes from the Pepper Bridge Vineyard, planted in the terraced remnants of ice age flood silts, is one of the Walla Walla Valley’s most reputable vineyards.  L’Ecole was the first winery to produce a wine from Pepper Bridge.  Unique site characteristics shine through in Apogee’s distinctive spicy aromas, dark fruit flavours, robust tannins, and rich structure.

This 2009 Apogee is boldly aromatic with aromas of nutmeg and clove, earthy hints of tobacco and leather, smoky dark fruit packed with chocolate and mint with a cherry finish.  Full-bodied with a rich structure and a long finish.

The winemakers at L’Ecole recommend the age-ability of this wine to be between 10 to 20 years, so at 11 years this 2009 is really starting to show at its best. Delicious now and for many more years yet!

  • 2009 Le Sol, Craggy Range Wine Republic Heros Red Wine

    2009 Le Sol, Craggy Range

    £8500

Le Sol is always a magnificent wine and a moment in time but this 09 is something rather special.  An opaque black core with a dark garnet rim. Redolent with black cherry, blueberry, melted liquorice, wild thyme and, of course, black pepper. This is intensely flavoured with layers of fine ripe tannin. The flavours just go on and on. A remarkable vintage.

Le Sol (french: the soil) is born of the renowned Gimblett Gravels viticultural appellation with its gravelly soils attracting the sun in summer and insulating the vines in winter. The vines are planted in the stoniest parts of the vineyard to a heritage clone of Syrah brought to New Zealand in the 1840s. Intensively hand managed, the grapes reveal a deep and dark Syrah with purple hues. Le Sol is always aromatically pure with a luscious yet elegant mid-palate and a distinctive fine tannin finish.

  • 2009 Packspur Pinot Noir, Mt DifficultyRed Wine

2009 Packspur Pinot Noir, Mt Difficulty

    £9500

The ‘Single Vineyard’ Pinot Noir wines of Mt Difficulty rival the ‘Block’ wines of Felton Road as the most highly-regarded of Central Otago. They join an elite band of superb, terroir-driven releases of Pinot Noir from New Zealand that are demanding a place alongside fine Burgundy wine. The ‘Single Vineyard’ wines are only made when the character of the vineyard site can be expressed faithfully with accompanying exceptional quality. ]

This 2009 Packspur is a very elegant Pinot with a beautiful perfume of velvety, raspberry/ cranberry notes; adding complexity and intrigue are clove and anise spice. Rich, full, red fruit of the forest palate entry leads into a well-textured lush midpalate. Finally, lovely finely structured tannins round out this dense and concentrated wine.

The grapes for the wines that carry the Mt Difficulty label have traditionally been sourced from vineyards situated on the Southside of the Kawarau River at Bannockburn. The Growers Series is a recent addition to the Mt Difficulty portfolio, allowing us to showcase the terroir of different sub-regions. Packspur Vineyard is situated on Heany Road in Lowburn, on the northern side of Cromwell (as opposed to Bannockburn to the South). The vineyard takes its name from the track that was used to pack supplies over the Pisa Range, from the Lowburn Valley to the gold fields of the Cardrona Valley. The vineyard irrigation is a miners’ water right from 1863.

  • 2009 Reva Syrah, Alban Vineyards Wine Republic Heros Red Wine

    2009 Reva Syrah, Alban Vineyards

    £12000

Established in 1989, Alban Vineyards represents California’s first winery and vineyard dedicated exclusively to the varietals of the Rhône.  Pioneered by John Alban at a time when anything that was neither Cabernet nor Chardonnay was barely grown in California, Alban was a groundbreaking project and has gone on to be regarded as one of the U.S.A’s best and most influential producers.

It is the Syrah releases from Alban which, justifiably, receive the most attention. Reva Syrah is Alban’s much-coveted, hard to come by top release; a 100% single vineyard Syrah which is aged in oak for 42 months before release. Upfront and highly varietal on the nose, this cult wine exudes aromas of cassis, wild herbs, violet, earth and smoke. The palate is incredibly full-bodied and decadent with immense depth and wonderful freshness. Flavours of dark fruit, coffee, toasty oak and perfumed spice build on an intense mid-palate before continuing on a long, momentous finish. We believe that this is California’s greatest example of this grape variety and will age gracefully over the next 20 years and beyond.
