  • 2021 Chardonnay, Brokenwood White Wine

    2021 Chardonnay, Brokenwood

    £2495

Established in 1970 Brokenwood Wines is one of Australia’s most reputable premium wine labels and a must-visit in the Hunter Valley. Consistently listed as a 5 star winery, Brokenwood is home to the famous Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz, the highly acclaimed ILR Reserve Semillon, and the popular Cricket Pitch Range.

Brokenwood, along with a large number of Chardonnay producers, are harvesting much earlier than 10 years ago. This is partly due to a lot of vineyards reaching maturity, and therefore having great fruit flavour and concentration at lower sugar levels. Additionally, consumers are demanding more finely structured Chardonnay, meaning lower alcohols and less oak.

Approximately two-thirds from Beechworth the balance being from a combination of the Yarra Valley, Tumbarumba and the Hunter Valley.

Brilliant very pale straw almost water like core with greenish tinged edges. Aromas of white peach and dried honey mix with some biscuity oak notes, cashew and delicate citrusy nougat. Light to mid weight with good focus and a refined feel, the palate is detailed with nectarine and white peach fruits which meld into a back drop of subtle dried honey, nougat, biscuity oak and infusions of gun flint. Good intensity finishing with a burst of fresh acidity. Elegant medium to long aftertaste.

  • 2021 Laissez Faire Riesling, Larry Cherubino Wine Republic Heros White Wine

2021 Laissez Faire Riesling, Larry Cherubino

    £2550

The 2021 Laissez-Faire Riesling from Larry Cherubino is a truly delicious example of Riesling wine. This is a completely dry white wine with spectacular intensity and a bouquet reminiscent of red apple and white peach with minerally notes in the background.  White stone fruit flavours are persistent on the pallet, there is a subtle texture with tight knot acidity lingering in the background which provides length and persistence.

Laissez-Faire means “let it be” and this reflects the hands-off approach that winemaker Larry Cherubino employs.  He has learnt from organics, bio-dynamics and natural wine practices, but is not dictated by one school of thought. Larrys says ‘ We don’t subscribe to dogma. You could call them natural wines, but we like to think of them as post-natural wines.  We believe in healthy and sustainable vineyard practices and winemaking transparency with as little as possible between the vine and finished wine

In the Laissez-Faire wines, there’s no added tannin, or acid, or animal fining products. There is zero sulfur used throughout the winemaking and only a minimal amount at bottling. They are using alternate varieties and blends to make naturally balanced wines.   From vine to bottle, the wine takes its course, hands-free.  The wines are also vegan friendly.

  • 2021 Laurens Campher Chenin Blanc, Muratie White Wine

2021 Laurens Campher Chenin Blanc, Muratie

    £2595

Laurens Campher was a young German soldier who started farming at Muratie in 1685. This blend is a labour of love, much like Laurens’ love for Ansela van de Caab. Their love was ultimately rewarding, bringing about the birth of their three children, her freedom and the development of a farm that was only officially granted to Campher in 1699 but is still going strong over three centuries later.

This wine is made from meticulously sourced grapes from different sites and slopes. Vineyards vary in age from 10 – 15 years old. The Chenin Blanc is from an old north facing bush vine block with low yields and good fruit purity.

For all its freshness, elegance and focus, the wine’s flavours are complex and intense, ranging from bright lemon, fresh pineapple, apricots and juicy nectarine to more concentrated lime marmalade as well as caramel and cream (from barrel fermentation and 11 months of maturation in mostly older French oak). On the palate the initial impression is floral (heady honeysuckle) finishing with white peaches and apricots, with hints of citrus and a fresh acidity – great persistence promising enjoyment over at least five years.

  • 2022 Etna Rosso, Pietradolce Red Wine

    2022 Etna Rosso, Pietradolce

    £2600

Pietradolce’s single-vineyard bottlings are among Etna’s most highly regarded. Pietradolce is all about the terroir and this 2019 Etna Rosso is made from 100% Nero Mascalese grapes grown at 800m on the northern slopes of Mount Etna.  The vineyard has rich volcanic soils and an intense day/night temperature swing which helps to provide their wines with extraordinary richness, texture, aroma and depth.

In the glass, this wine opens with fragrant aromas of cherry, raspberry, herbs, chocolate and spice are joined by a subtle saline tang. It’s a similar theme in the mouth, with herbs and spice dancing around the core of vibrant, juicy raspberry and cherry fruits. Creamy softness emerges on the mid-palate, as well as some tannic grip, leading to a long, fresh, slightly saline finish that leaves you wanting another sip.

A perfect introduction to the beautiful wines of Sicily.

Les Caillottes, which is made up of a high proportion of stony fragments of coarse Kimmeridgian limestone upon a clay subsoil and the wines from these soils impart aromatic structure and freshness; Les Terres Blanches which are made up of Kimmeridgian marl and is extremely rich in fossilised shellfish and has the distinctive characteristic of turning white when it dries, hence its local name, which translates as ‘white earth’. • 2021 Viognier ‘Age of Grace’, Lismore Wine Republic Heros White Wine

2021 Viognier ‘Age of Grace’, Lismore

    £2800

Lismore Estate is based in Greyton within the Overberg region of the Western Cape of South Africa.  It’s here with the Sonderend mountains as a backdrop that winemaker & proprietor Samantha O’Keefe makes her fabulous wines.

This Viognier is a reflection of Samantha’s obsession with how the special soil, climate and a mysterious sense of place come together to produce an extraordinary wine that tells you its story. The vines are grown on rose-quartz soils in Elgin, which is a cool, high altitude plateau. The region offers a lengthened ripening period which brings the grapes late into the season, often three to four weeks later than traditional wine-growing areas in South Africa. This provides the opportunity to develop deep complexity and concentration.

In the glass, the 2021 Age of Grace Viognier is an expressive wine that seduces you with beautiful perfumes of honeysuckle and orange blossom and a textured palate of apricot, kiwi and pineapple. A sensual and exotic experience. Barrel fermented and aged. Enjoy it now or allow it to gain complexity with further cellaring.

  • 2021 Amativo, Cantele Red Wine

    2021 Amativo, Cantele

    £2800

While Cantele’s approach to grape growing and winemaking is rooted in the traditions of Salento viticulture, it doesn’t mean that the current generation of the Cantele family doesn’t continue to experiment and push the boundaries of southern Italian winemaking.

One of its most critically acclaimed projects has been AMATIVO, a wine made from a blend of two of Puglia’s most important red grape varieties: Negroamaro and Primitivo. And the name of the wine, like the blend, is a composite of the grapes that go into it: AMA from the amaro in Negroamaro and TIVO from Primitivo.

An “international-style” wine created by blending two native grapes from Puglia, the flavour profile of this cuvée gets its earthiness from the Negroamaro and its rich fruit character from the Primitivo. While the Negroamaro imparts freshness and just the right amount of tannic structure, the Primitivo gives the wine balance through its rich red fruit flavour.
