  Ten Minutes by Tractor needs little introduction, nor does the man in charge – Martin Spedding. A gently-spoken man with a background in finance and IT, in 2002, he finally acknowledged the fact that his true passion lay in wine. Despite his origins in New South Wales, he simply couldn’t get enough of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and would travel down to Victoria to immerse himself in Australia’s heartland of these noble varieties. In 2003 he visited one of his favourite small wineries on Mornington Peninsula and was delighted to discover that it was for sale. Without a moment’s hesitation, he snapped it up, and so began Martin’s journey with Ten Minutes by Tractor.

  Complexity is always the name of the game with this single vineyard ‘Wallis’ Chardonnay -this 2021 iteration is another complete wine. White nectarine, fig and green papaya jump from the glass inviting you to explore this elegant Chardonnay.   Ridgeview’s beautiful vineyard and winery is nestled at the foot of the South Downs in the village of Ditchling.  They are in an ideal location, set within the picturesque South Downs National Park, famous for its chalky Champagnesque soils.

  This 2011 Blanc de Blanc is made from 100% Chardonnay from Ridgeviews home block Chardonnay vineyard.  It has a substantial bottle age that has allowed it to evolve into a stunning example of English sparkling wine.   Elegant, pale gold with silvery highlights in the glass. The nose has classic lemon zest aromas alongside vintage-specific notes of peach, lychee and pineapple. The generous fruit on the nose and palate is balanced by a complex hazelnut and toasted brioche character. The palate offers a ripe, rounded body to compliment the bright acidity and elegant mousse. There is a saline minerality that lingers long on the finely-balanced finish.

  This 2015 Frankland River Cabernet Sauvignon is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes sourced from his Pedestal vineyard in Western Australia’s Wilyabrup region. Inky black, the wine has strong classic bay leaf and earthy cabernet tones. Very focused, mouth filling with very fine tannins. Oak is supporting the intense fruit.   Having celebrated their 100th year of trading in 2013, Barros Port is undoubtedly one of the most prestigious companies producing and trading in Port. Much of their success comes from Colheita Ports – old Tawnies from a single year matured in cask for a minimum period of seven years. Their expertise in Colheita Ports has established them as the stand out producer of this style. Barros leaves their Colheita Ports to mature in cask until being hand bottled to order. The loss of wine from evaporation (known as the ‘Angel’s Share’) is much higher in comparison to bottle ageing. It is a sacrifice they are willing to make and one that helps them achieve unsurpassed quality in their Colheita wines.

  This 1998 Colheita is exceptional.  In the glass, it has bright brown-tawny colour with slight reflexes of red. The wine reveals a rich and elegant nose, combining the dried fruits aromas with the aromatic wood notes. Soft and silky in the taste, full of ripe figs and sweet flavours. A sensation of depth, in an elegant and distinctive style.  Exceptional.

  The vineyard is set in the classic cool climate subregion of Red Hill at an altitude of 146 metres above sea level. The Pinot Noir vines are aged between 15 and 22 years; six clones are planted each with subtle characteristics which impart complexity to the resulting wine. The soil is a deep red volcanic clay that allows dry farming, without irrigation. Founder, Lindsay McCall, still tends to the vineyard characterised by its distinctive Lyre or ‘U’ trellis system which sits on an elaborate steel frame assembly.

  The Reserve range continues to be the best of what Xanadu are able to produce in a given vintage – single vineyard or otherwise.   Dubbed ‘the Sassicaia of the South’ by Robert Parker in 1995,  Montevetrano is a wine that sells at a price well below its comparative quality. With a trailblazing owner, creating wines from international grape varieties that are recognisably Italian, Montevetrano has gained a cult following. Brainchild of Silvia Imperatore, who enlisted the help of her friend and top winemaking consultant Riccardo Cotarella, it’s not hard to see why the estate is so frequently likened to legend Sassicaia.

  The 2005 Montevetrano is holding together very nicely. The bouquet is elegantly polished with fine aromas of pressed dark fruit, black currant and spice. Now, more than fifteen years after the vintage, the wine has come together with seamless evolution. There are no loose ends here. The dark fruit segues immediately to spice and later onto crushed mineral. That seamless quality also applies to the long and polished mouthfeel.  Finishes clean and impressively long.
