  This wine is complex with hints of minerality on the nose. The flavours on the palate are extremely concentrated with a superb balance. A very approachable wine that will continue to age with grace.

  The grapes for `Les Clos` are sourced from a 0.67 -hectare single vineyard, which was planted in 1964 on a south-western facing slope. The soils are Kimmeridgian clay and limestone. This wine is certified organic from the 2018 vintage, as such Domaine de L’Enclos use only organic fertilisers in the vineyard and all of the fruit is hand-harvested.

  2017 Syrah ‘ Deconstructed Lake District Cartref SH9c’, Kershaw

  This outstanding Syrah, one of South Africa’s best, is part of a range of wines called Deconstructed which winemaker Richard Kershaw created to show the world-class vineyards of Elgin and the differences between vineyards and clones in the region.

  Sourced from a single parcel in the western part of Elgin the 9c clone when planted in cooler areas is known to produce wines that are well-scented, delicately balanced and savoury. They are medium in weight resonating elegance, finesse of tannin, and purity of fruit, the flavours revealing more white pepper, violet/lavender, Victoria plum and iodine. They tend to exude freshness and energy with lively acidity giving precision to the wine. The Cartref soils, a mixture of decomposed granite, pebbles and quartz, add gracefulness and heighten the fruit intensity.

  The Gran Reserva 904 from La Rioja Alta is an iconic red wine from the Rioja region of Spain. The 2011 vintage was officially rated “Excellent” by the Rioja Consejo Regulador and that makes this 2011 904 Gran Reserva a must-have wine!

  In the glass, it has an intense, deep cherry-red colour with a garnet-red rim. Intense and complex aromas, dominated by fruit (blackberry jam, raspberries and orange zest) that reveals underlying spicy and balsamic notes of cigar box, cedar liquorice, cloves, chocolate mints and toasted wood. Elegantly refined entry. Fresh and lively in the mouth, nicely balanced with polished, silky tannins and a gentle, delicate finish. Very long aftertaste, with citrus and balsamic notes that provide long, complex final sensations.  A classic Rioja which stands out for its freshness and great bottle ageing potential.

  Made from Tempranillo (90%) grapes from vines over 60 years old planted in Briñas, Labastida and Villalba, and Graciano (10%) from the Montecillo vineyard in the municipality of Fuenmayor.

  Basket Press Shiraz is made using equipment from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, before aging in a collection of seasoned American and French oak hogsheads and large casks for two years. After bottling the wine is sealed under the highest quality cork. This approach enables Rockford to make the kind of traditional, soft, deeply coloured, earthy Australian red wine that Robert O’Callaghan first became fascinated by as a budding winemaker in the 1960s.

  2012 3D Pinot Noir, Clifton Brewer

  This is an outstanding Pinot Noir from the renowned Brewer-Clifton.  The 3D vineyard is nestled between Lafond and Ampelos in the Santa Rita Hills and was the first vineyard planted by the Greg Brewer and Steve Clifton in 2007.     It is pure and elegant on the nose with expressive aromas of red cherries, candied raspberry and strawberry.  The palate is expansive with flavours of sweet fruits, tea leaf and fine spices.  Lovely structure and precision here. Incredible finesse and purity.

  At Brewer Clifton they strive to remove the winemaker’s signature, allowing the voice of the vineyard to be the overriding expression.  Only neutral barrels are employed and they strive for whole cluster fermentation, interestingly the fruit from each vineyard is handled identically from harvest to bottling, allowing the true essence of each site to be expressed.

  They also farm with a focus of ripening the stems of the bunch alongside the fruit, allowing the cluster to be in harmony. Working with the stems allows for wines that are structured, earthy and balanced with the exceptional Santa Rita Hills fruit. The analogy they use is roasting fish or meat on the bone, the bone offers complex flavours very different than taking it off of the bone to cook it.

  The 2015 is a wine of great substance and beautiful ripeness. The generous core of blackberry, blackcurrant, cherry and redcurrant fruit is enveloped in savoury roasted notes. It is opulent and rich, with fine-grained tannins which delicately coat the palate through to the endless finish. Classic Margaux.

  The vineyard is managed in an environmentally friendly manner and Cantenac Brown holds the Haute Valeur Environmentale certificate (HVE3) level 3 which is the highest level. Only plant-based fertilisers are applied using a moderate and balanced approach in tune with the needs of the vines. The double Guyot trained vines are meticulously cultivated throughout the year, with pruning, removal of buds, leaves and secondary shoots; thinning out and controlled yields. The Cantenac Brown team uses traditional soil maintenance techniques to enhance the structural, chemical and biological properties of the soil. The soil is predominantly gravelly soil, with clay and sand.

  Château Batailley is one of the oldest Estates in Pauillac. Its name goes back to the last battle of the Hundred Years’ war in Medoc, which took place on the plateau that descends to Château Latour.

  This wine is from the underrated 2012 vintage and by this I mean you don’t have to wait 20 years to enjoy it!    This is drinking superbly now with a luscious Pauillac nose of cigar tobacco, cassis and spice.   This beguiling Magnum of Pinot Noir from the excellent 2019 vintage has outstanding depth of colour for Pinot Noir displaying an opaque dark red-black core with a dark red-purple hue. The powerfully scented nose is dominated by ripe black cherry and dark plum aromas laced with anise over toasty cedar, light earth and spice. The palate is rich and concentrated that’s filled with dark and black cherry flavours, dark plums and anise underpinned by scorched earth and spicy cedar. Sturdy but fine-grained tannins provide some underlying muscle to the fruit. Excellent power with a long finish of dark and black fruits, anise, scorched earth and spicy cedar. Will improve for 6-8 years.

  The Paringa Chardonnay is the estates top chardonnay wine and a single vineyard wine.

  The nose is highly perfumed with a complex array of white peach, pear combining with vanilla, nougat and almonds.   The palate is classic cool climate with white fleshy stone fruits, citrus notes and a savoury nutty oak flavour that is so seductive.  The rich and textured mouthfeel gives way to a lingering balanced finish.

  The name ‘The Paringa’ denotes the single-vineyard origin of this wine. Lindsay McCall planted the first vines on the Paringa Estate vineyard in 1985, with ten acres being under vine by 1990. From this site fruit of distinction is born from a combination of red volcanic (Ferrasol) soil, a north-facing aspect and altitude of 146m on Paringa Road, Red Hill South. In creating this wine viticulture and winemaking practices are approached with the intent of preserving a pure expression of the site from the soil through to bottle.

  Charlie Melton uses the traditional Australian technique for their sparkling red, as pioneered by Seppelts at Great Western. The base wine is aged for around two years or so in oak and then tirage bottled and left on lees for up to four years. This gives a complex aromatic of fruit sweetness and classic autolysis character and fine bubble. An important factor is the liquering dosage as this degree of sweetness ensures they will develop for decades.

  This 2002 Sparkling red was disgorged in August 2005 so has had a further 16 years in bottle.   It is an incredible bottle of wine and still has decades to go!   Rich black cherry and plum on the nose with a delightful charry element. It has a fine mousse with powerful red and black fruits. Spicy, dense with a beguiling sweetness. It has a tight, dense core of rich fruit. Off-dry and has fabulous intensity and complexity.  Fabulous!
