  • 2020 Chianti Classico Organic, Querciabella Red Wine

    2020 Chianti Classico Organic, Querciabella

    £2895

Querciabella Chianti Classico has been the centrepiece of Querciabella’s winemaking operations since the winery’s debut. Consistently ranking at the highest levels of critical acclaim it’s a real delight for wine and food enthusiasts all over the world.

A beautiful balancing act of crisp, inviting acidity, pure varietal fruit flavour and character, Querciabella Chianti Classico represents the pinnacle of high-altitude, perfectly exposed Sangiovese fruit.  Its complexity and consistency derive from sourcing the grapes from top sites across the Classico region.

Each vineyard is cared for on a lot by lot basis to respect the essence of each site. The same focus and precision in the cellar, allow for natural winemaking with minimal intervention, that preserves the purity of the fruit. After about 14 months in fine-grained oak barrels, and regular racking, only the best lots make it to the final blend. Once bottled, the wine rests patiently for a few more months before release. This patient maturation adds a layer of softness and enhances the varietal fruit notes typical of quality Sangiovese.

Sangiovese practically screams for anything with tomato sauce and the natural pairing with Tuscan regional food is, of course, Pappa al Pomodoro. A heartier option is to pair this full-bodied wine with a dish that can stand up to its great structure and complexity like Spaghetti Bolognese.

  • 2020 Chenin Blanc, Lismore Wine Republic Heros White Wine

    2020 Chenin Blanc, Lismore

    £2900

Lismore Estate is based in Greyton within the Overberg region of the Western Cape of South Africa.  It’s here with the Sonderend mountains as a backdrop that winemaker & proprietor Samantha O’Keefe makes her fabulous wines.

This is Samantha’s first Chenin Blanc release and with only 2000 bottles produced it is a very rare beast!  We have 12 bottles arriving in May 22 and that’s it!

Greg Sherwood MW had his to say about in January – ” Made from grapes grown in Stanford with a small portion of skin contact, this maiden Chenin Blanc from Samantha O’Keefe is deliciously focused, pure and precise with a pronounced stony minerality of crushed gravel over lemon and tangerine peel, tart pear, white peach and flinty nuances suggesting a hint of reduction. Counter-intuitively, the palate is explosive and intense, bristling with green apple pastille, crunchy pear, liquid minerality infused with fresh fennel, dried herbs and hints of fynbos. But ultimately, this wine is defined by its uniquely taut, glassy acids that are cool, linear, crystalline and electrically fresh. A lovely lean, cool-climate expression of Chenin Blanc fruit! • 2013 Alea Riesling, Grosset Wine Republic Heros White Wine

    2013 Alea Riesling, Grosset

    £2950

The Alea Riesling comes from a narrow corridor of hard red rock with poor, orangey, red loam vineyard reminded Jeff of the great German rieslings that were not fully dry, he decided to take a very different approach to the creation of Alea. With moderate baumes, high acidity and low pH, the aim was to make a wine with a generous palate balanced by zippy natural acidity on the finish.

The 2013 Grosset Alea Riesling is delightfully floral with white flowers and a whisper of lemon blossom and fresh garden herbs. There are lime juice flavours, a hint of lemon and a beautifully balanced long generous palate that leads to a gentle grip and zingy dry finish. “The Alea has come of age” says Jeff. “This vintage is a fraction drier than previous releases and is wonderfully complex while remaining delicate and perfectly balanced. We put this down to equal measures of vineyard maturity and experience.”

The Nebbiolo vines are grown in the northern Italian region of Piedmont, where the climate is continental and is tempered by the Tanaro River and its tributaries. Grown in marl clay and sand soils, the late-ripening variety is usually harvested in early October.
