  2009 Grésy Chardonnay Langhe DOC, Marchesi di Grésy

  Piemonte produces some of the finest, most Burgundian, examples of Chardonnay in Italy. This is one of the best – a complex barrel-aged style, and one of Italy’s finest examples of the grape. The Chardonnay grapes are sourced from two parcels of vines. One is in Barbaresco, just below Martinenga, facing south-west at an altitude of 230m. The second is on the north-east side of Monte Aribaldo in the commune of Treiso, 370 metres above sea level.

  This delicious 2009 Chardonnay shows aromas of nectarine, Mirabelle plum, fresh herbs and minerals, with a suggestion of exotic fruits. Sweet, suave and expansive, with an exotic botrytis hint to the nectarine and sexy oak flavours. This wine spentt 21 months in lightly toasted new Allier barrels, with the lees being stirred regularly for the first 12 months.

The vineyard has an abundance of rounded quartzite stones, known as “Galet Roulés”, which derive from the Villafranchian period.   The 2015 Finca Martelo Reserva is a juicy wine, thrilling the mouth with plentiful red and black fruit. A wise and careful ageing process in wood is appreciated in its seductive and well-balanced character and fresh sensations. It makes no attempt to hide the power of its modern profile but the character of a traditional wine and other more evolved touches are never far away. A top-quality Reserva wine produced by a winery steeped in expertise creating classic Rioja wines.

  Head winemaker Julio Saenz refers to it as “our little Burgundy” because of how closely it represents this unique location. In fact, the wine itself is a field blend, 95% Tempranillo with 5% other varieties including Mazuelo, Garnacha, and even Viura. The chalk soils and 80-year-old vines at Torre de Oña produce a fuller, riper style of Rioja, while the high altitude and Atlantic influence in Rioja Alavesa keeps the wine fresh and elegant.   Aromatic notes of flowers, golden apple and tropical fruit are accompanied by distinctive mineral overtones, typical of the native Carricante grape. Refreshing and crisp, with a lovely, spicy finish.

  Made from 100% Carricante which is an ancient white wine grape variety from eastern Sicily. It is thought to have been growing on the volcanic slopes of Mt Etna for at least a thousand years.

  Luci Luci grapes are grown in a vineyard is situated at an elevation of approximately 620 metres above sea level, where warm days and cool nights encourage a long ripening period concentrating the flavours in the grapes while retaining balancing acidity. The vines are grown in volcanic soils, which are rich in minerals and fossils. The soil is permeable to air and water and is rich in pumice stone and microelements, which allow the plants to produce a complex aromatic profile. The espalier-trained vines are spur pruned.   The Muscat à Petit Grains grapes come from the Côtes Catalans, which is the principle IGP allowing only mono-varietal wines. The vines thrive at an altitude of 325 metres elevation in the Haute Vallée de l’Agly, in the Roussillon region. The climate is Mediterranean, strongly influenced by cooling coastal breezes combined with mountain freshness from the foothills of the Pyrenees which balance the hot, arid summers. The terroir is made up of a mosaic of black schist soils, which date back to the Cretaceous period. The schistous marl produces shallow soils, which force the vines to send their roots deep in search of water and nutrients. The vineyard is certified organic.

  2019 Linda Vista Chardonnay, Matthiasson

  Steve Matthiasson is a bit of a legend in Napa Valley and this wine is made from the Linda Vista Vineyard in the Oak Knoll region of Napa Valley.  Oak Knoll is regarded as one of the classic Chardonnay spots in Napa as the cool winds and clay soils preserve zesty acidity and freshness, while the Napa sun provides richness and ripeness.

  Steve leased the vineyard in 2011 and set about making a classic Napa Chardonnay.  To get complexity, completeness and balance in his Chardonnay, Steve harvests grapes a number of different times during the ripening period to achieve a diversity of ripeness, the earlier harvests contribute acidity and minerality, and the later harvests contribute flesh and richness.

  This 2019 Linda Vista Chardonnay has an exotic nose of Golden Delicious apples, yellow peaches, musk melon and honey that leads through to the palate. The medium acidity is balanced by pleasant fleshiness, finishing very clean with a hint of minerality. Refreshing and with moderate alcohol, this wine is all about pleasure, begging to be drunk up, with some oysters or a roast chicken and a big smile.

  2021 Ovilos, Biblia Chora

  Biblia Chora is one of the newest estates on the Greek scene.  Evangelos Geravassiliou and Vassilis Tsaktsalis are two of the best white winemakers in Greece.  The vineyards are based in Kavala, the second-largest city in the north of Greece, where the excellent soil and microclimate provide long growing seasons. They make cutting edge, world-class wines. 

  This 2021 is a blend of 50% Semillon and 50% Assyrtiko grapes.   The distinctive and characteristic aromas of apricot and honey from the Semillon blend perfectly with the citrus and lemon notes from the Assyrtiko, with nuances of vanilla and nutty hints adding complexity. Elegant, with a creamy texture, this stylish wine is beautifully balanced by refreshing palate which leads to a long finish.

  Located in the coastal region of Pangeon, Biblia Chora’s privately owned estate vineyard is situated at 380 metres altitude and extends over 78 hectares. With the striking Pangeon Mountain as the backdrop and the sea breeze coming from the Aegean Sea in front the estate, the vines thrive in this mild, Mediterranean climate which is characterised by mild winters and cool summers. The wide diurnal temperature range encourages a long, slow maturation of the grapes, concentrating the flavours in the berries. The vineyard is cultivated according to strict ecological agricultural standards in order to respect the environment and local flora and fauna.

  2020 Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Beaune`Sous Eguisons`, Domaine Jean-Noël Gagnard

  Caroline Lestimé, winemaker at Jean-Noël Gagnard, decided to plant Chardonnay vines on this plot of the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, back in 2007.   The vineyard is in La Rochepot, on an embankment overlooking and bordering the western part of the Saint-Aubin appellation Le Ban. The name “Sous Éguisons” refers to the cliff above the vineyard. The cliff offers protection from the north winds, which is a significant advantage given how harsh the climate is and how bitter the spring frosts are at this altitude. The natural growth cycle of the vines is also slower and the grapes mature a full week later than at lower levels.

  The wine itself is a revelation, pure, pristine and delicious.  The matchstick mineral nose shows pure lemony fruit with a hint of florality. The palate is linear and precise with taut lemony fruit and a fine tangy, stony mineral quality. There’s just the faintest hint of spicy, toasty oak, but the real theme here is pure, vital lemon fruit with great precision and lovely integrated acidity.
