Red WineWinemaker Oscar Alegre is at the forefront of a revolution in Spain. “Traditional Rioja is actually only 150 years old, driven by French influence at the end of the 19th Century – but Alegre Valgañon are among those championing a return to the much deeper roots of the region, making wine as it was before Phylloxera. Oscar and his wife Eva make gorgeous, sculpted Rioja from old plots of vines in the shadow of the Obarenes Mountains which are some of the highest and coolest in the region, yielding wines that are refined and aromatic. Their vineyard plots are managed meticulously and they favour whole bunch fermentation, long macerations and ageing in large, neutral barrels.
In the glass this 2020 Rioja Tinto is silky smooth with a freshness and lightness of touch to it’s crunchy red, mineral tinged fruits. Garnacha adds a little bit of weight but overall the wine is wonderfully silky and elegant with terroir and fruit shining through rather than oak.

Red WineThis wine is all about the purity of Pinot Noir with spicy savoury and bright, juicy red florals and fruits. It is medium-bodied with soft velvety tannins, a mix of tart and sweet cherry fruit with a chocolate touch to the lightly oaked finish and a spicy zestiness to the lingering aftertaste.
The Butcher’s Cart harks back to a time when the Lindner family, founders of the great St Hallett’s estate, were family butchers and horse and cart was the norm to get about. Much has changed in the Barossa since then, but there is the same meticulous care now performed in the jewel-like vineyards and immaculate cellar. This fabulous dark, spicy Shiraz uses grapes from a selection of vineyards, all planted on the red-brown earth, which tends to produce a rich, generous wine. Each parcel is fermented separately, with a pump over six times a day to extract rich flavour and tannins. Ageing for 10 months in 20% new oak puts the finishing touches to this rich, unctuous red.
Aroma: Dark ripe blackberry and raspberry, with liquorice and nutmeg spice

White WineEstablished in 1860, Tahbilk is a historic family-owned winery, renowned for its Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and of course their Marsanne! Marsanne is one of the world’s rarest grape varieties originating in the Northern Rhone & Hermitage regions of France it is grown in only 3 other countries, Australia, America & Switzerland. Tahbilk holds the largest and oldest single holding of the variety in the world.
In this 2017 vintage the complexity that comes with age, shines through with lifted honeysuckle and toasty notes on the nose. The rich and honeyed palate is brimming with lemon citrus fruits and finishes with a chalky, mineral freshness.
Tahbilk’s history with Marsanne is traced back to the 1860s with the sourcing of ‘White Hermitage’ cuttings from the ‘St Hubert’s’ Vineyard in Victoria’s Yarra Valley. The grape was Marsanne and although none of these plantings has survived, the Estate still produces Marsanne from plantings dating back to 1927.
A full-bodied Chardonnay with bold flinty notes surrounded by peach undertones. The creamy palate has a wonderful balancing freshness and reveals layers of flint, lemon blossom and biscuity nuances complemented by subtle oak spice.
The grapes are sourced exclusively from mature vines within a single hectare vineyard block called the Reed Vineyard. This beautiful vineyard is situated on an old riverbed, where the shallow, loamy Renwick soils are derived from stony alluvium and offer the wine excellent drainage. The vines are a mixture of Burgundian Chardonnay clones; predominantly they are clone 95, with a proportion of Mendoza clones and some clone 15. The fruit from this block has become renowned for delivering crisp, flinty flavours.
The grapes were carefully selected and vinified with 100% wild yeasts. Some were vinified as whole bunches, to add complexity. Fermentation took place in a selection of new and seasoned French oak barriques, lasting 10 months where malolactic fermentation took place imparting a creamy texture.
Red WineAn opulent wine with a depth of concentrated black fruit. The tannins are present but enjoyable as they are polished and integrated. Black fruits on the nose are echoed on the palate with a touch of liquorice and spice through to a long, silky finish. The 2018 summer was very hot and dry in the southern Rhône, which allowed the grapes to reach excellent maturity, resulting in expressive wines with wonderful fruit concentration.
The vineyard is situated in the Rasteau appellation on hillside slopes which offer good drainage and sun exposure. The soil layers are complex due to their various origins. Brown clay, which comprises sediment from the Alps from the miocène period, and grey clay, which is made up of sediment from algae, overlap here at root level imparting extra complexity to the wine. The sunny weather and strong northern wind, known as the Mistral, keep the vines dry and healthy. The vines have an average age of 70 years and are cultivated according to sustainable methods.
Red WineTahbilk Shiraz is sourced from nearly 30 hectares of vines planted at various times from the 1930s through the early 2000s. Made using traditional Tahbilk techniques; fermentation takes place in 150 + year old open vats, before maturation in French and American oak for 18 months before bottling. The resultant releases are noted as being fruit-driven wines of much flavour and substance, proven over the years to develop added character when cellared. Varietally expressive with ample plum and blackberry fruits, there is warm earth and spicy savouriness that immediately appeals with a backbone of fine, opulent tannins and a rich, persistent finish.

The vines are grown at around 134 metres elevation of gently undulating and flat terrain. The soils are sandy loam with ferric oxide content, which vary from very fine sand near the anabranch to denser loams on the plains. Tahbilk has Shiraz vineyards dating back from the 1860s to the 1990s. The oldest surviving block is the ‘1860 block’; planted on its own roots in sandy soils, which has made it impossible for phylloxera to colonise the vine roots.

Just as wine is made from grapes, mead is made from honey; however, unlike many other meads you may have tried before, the Loxwood Pure Mead is created using a unique blend of 100% British honey in the ferment – the process that makes the alcohol. It is fermented dry and then back-sweetened with honey, to give the most natural flavour and a delicate sweetness.
In the glass it has a deep golden colour with honey-citrus aromas. Deliciously off-dry this honey wine has an elegant minerality and crisp zesty flavours which complement the rich, creamy, textured finish.
Pure Mead is a great pairing with a cheeseboard, slow-roasted pork or ham – think anything you might have honey with! If you would serve a rich or sweeter white wine like a Riesling, try Pure Mead instead.

The fruit comes from two distinct Pinot Noir vineyards: Danny’s Vineyard and Grava, two of the most northerly plantings in Monterey County. The vineyards nestle up to the Gabilan Mountain Range on the eastern side of the Salinas Valley; approximately 10 miles directly across from the Santa Lucia Highlands. The marine influence of the nearby Monterey Bay and the morning fog which clears for the afternoon sun, results in a cool mesoclimate and a long hang-time for the fruit. The grapes reflect the cool climate character, with complex aromatics and flavours and natural balancing acidity.

This wine is jam-packed with Barossa Shiraz and Mataro (Mourvedre) flavours….plums, black fruits and warm spices of cinnamon, nutmeg and 5 spices. There’s a touch of mid-palate sweetness, some mocha and black olive and the soft tannins are integrated seamlessly through the mid-palate. The subtle use of oak allows the rich dark fruit to take centre stage.
