2020 Old Vine Savatiano “Orivatis Wild”, Akriotou

    £1895

A wildly expressive and complex wine, full of lemon, honeysuckle, peach, melon and buttery aromas. Textured and creamy, with concentrated layers of citrus fruit, wet stone, nuances of bread and a delicious honey note through to a long, intense finish.

The grapes are sourced from a single vineyard called ‘Gouriona’, located in Plataea, a small village at the foot of the Kitheronas Mountain, in Central Greece. The vineyard is situated at an altitude of 250 to 320 metres elevation and during the autumn and winter months cool air masses blow down from the mountains, carrying dew which refreshes the vineyard with crucial humidity. Cold winters, hot summers and long, dry autumns combine with long periods of sunshine to enable the grapes to reach excellent maturity and complexity. The Savatiano variety is suited to the hot, dry climate as it has excellent drought resistant properties. The grapes for this wine come from old vines of 60 to 65 years.

2022 Sauvignon Blanc , Te Muna Road Vineyard, Craggy Range

    £1895

A Sauvignon Blanc of precision and purity, with aromas of fresh kaffir lime leaf and white floral notes. Sophisticated and moreish, it delivers abundant fruit flavours, a balanced texture and a crystalline finish.

The grapes come from the Te Muna Road vineyard in Wairarapa subregion of Martinborough, in the southeastern corner of the North Island. The vineyard consists of two distinct terraces, the lower terrace comprises young stony soils interwoven with limestone, which provides an excellent environment for Sauvignon Blanc. The cooler climate of Martinborough ensures the wine is aromatic with steely minerality while the rocky soils impart intensity of fruit. The region’s warm, dry summers and mild winters lead to complex and structured wines with subtle aromatics and an elegant finish.

    2023 Vermentino ‘La Pettegola’, Banfi

La Pettegola’s translation has a double meaning. The first representing the name of coastal sea birds, and the second meaning, the gossiper. Think of the sweet little old ladies in the square chatting about the goings-on of town.

The wine itself is straw yellow in colour, with intense citrus and yellow peach hints accompanied by floral and sage notes. The full structure is well balanced by the freshness leading to a persistent and fruity finish on the palate.

2019 Cap Classique Brut, Lomond Wines

Original price was: £2250.Current price is: £1895. 16% saving

A crisp and refreshing Cap Classique with notes of white pear and delicate floral hints through to a rich, elegant and creamy palate with refined bubbles layered with zesty freshness.

The Pinot Noir grapes come from a single vineyard planted in south westerly facing blocks on the upper reaches of the farm in sandy, gravelly and highly weathered soils, with a clay substructure. This aspect ensures that these vines are cooled during the summer months by the prevailing winds from the sea. The breezes blow directly off the ocean in both a south-easterly and south-westerly direction, providing consistent coolness throughout the summer months, with temperatures seldom reaching above 30°C. The Chardonnay component comes from a selected block grown in gravel soils, which allows good drainage and produces grapes with a fresh, elegant profile. This cool microclimate creates a slow ripening period, allowing the grapes to build flavour complexity and produce naturally balanced wines.

2023 Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc, Auntsfield

    £1895

The 2023 Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc from Auntsfield Estate is a vibrant and textured expression of Marlborough’s first and most historic vineyard. Established in 1892, Auntsfield carries the legacy of pioneering winemaking in the region, and today the Cowley family continues to craft wines that are deeply rooted in the estate’s unique terroir. Auntsfield’s approach to Sauvignon Blanc emphasises complexity and mouthfeel, producing wines that go beyond the typical Marlborough style.

Pale straw in the glass, the 2023 Sauvignon Blanc bursts with lifted, pure aromas of fresh passionfruit, ripe citrus, and lime, enhanced by layers of lemongrass, dried herbs, papaya, and a touch of jalapeño for added aromatic intrigue. On the palate, the wine is both powerful and elegant, with ripe flavours of passionfruit juice and white peach seamlessly interwoven with citrus elements of lime zest and mandarin pith. There is remarkable concentration and weight, carried by a taut structure and mineral backbone that creates a lively, balanced tension. 2017 Museum Release Marsanne, Tahbilk

    £1950

Established in 1860, Tahbilk is a historic family-owned winery, renowned for its Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and of course their Marsanne! Marsanne is one of the world’s rarest grape varieties originating in the Northern Rhone & Hermitage regions of France it is grown in only 3 other countries, Australia, America & Switzerland. Tahbilk holds the largest and oldest single holding of the variety in the world.

In this 2017 vintage the complexity that comes with age, shines through with lifted honeysuckle and toasty notes on the nose. The rich and honeyed palate is brimming with lemon citrus fruits and finishes with a chalky, mineral freshness.

Tahbilk’s history with Marsanne is traced back to the 1860s with the sourcing of ‘White Hermitage’ cuttings from the ‘St Hubert’s’ Vineyard in Victoria’s Yarra Valley. The grape was Marsanne and although none of these plantings has survived, the Estate still produces Marsanne from plantings dating back to 1927.

The fruit from this block has become renowned for delivering crisp, flinty flavours.

The grapes were carefully selected and vinified with 100% wild yeasts. Some were vinified as whole bunches, to add complexity. Fermentation took place in a selection of new and seasoned French oak barriques, lasting 10 months where malolactic fermentation took place imparting a creamy texture.

2023 Noble Riesling ‘Godfreys Creek Reserve’, Saint Clair, 375ml

    £1950

Saint Clair Godfrey’s Creek Noble Reserve Riesling is a deliciously complex dessert wine, with a bouquet of clover honey, cinnamon and beeswax. Luscious and silky on the palate with rich orange, apricot and cocoa notes leading to a long, smooth finish.

The fruit for Godfrey’s Creek is grown in the heart of the Marlborough Valley. The vineyard is situated on the Wairau Valley floor, where it experiences early morning dew and light afternoon breezes; a successful combination in the production of Noble Riesling. Select grape bunches were left to hang on the vine until late in the season, promoting raisining and botrytis. The grapes were hand-harvested once the desired level of sugar had been reached. This wine is only made in vintages when the season facilitates the extra hanging time required for the growth of botrytis on the grapes. The vineyard is cultivated according to sustainable practices and is accredited to Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand.

    2018 Rasteau, Domaine Combe Julière

    £1950

An opulent wine with a depth of concentrated black fruit. The tannins are present but enjoyable as they are polished and integrated. Black fruits on the nose are echoed on the palate with a touch of liquorice and spice through to a long, silky finish. The 2018 summer was very hot and dry in the southern Rhône, which allowed the grapes to reach excellent maturity, resulting in expressive wines with wonderful fruit concentration.

The vineyard is situated in the Rasteau appellation on hillside slopes which offer good drainage and sun exposure. The soil layers are complex due to their various origins. Brown clay, which comprises sediment from the Alps from the miocène period, and grey clay, which is made up of sediment from algae, overlap here at root level imparting extra complexity to the wine. The sunny weather and strong northern wind, known as the Mistral, keep the vines dry and healthy. The vines have an average age of 70 years and are cultivated according to sustainable methods.

  • 2018 Shiraz, Tahbilk Red Wine

    2018 Shiraz, Tahbilk

    £1950

Tahbilk Shiraz is sourced from nearly 30 hectares of vines planted at various times from the 1930s through the early 2000s. Made using traditional Tahbilk techniques; fermentation takes place in 150 + year old open vats, before maturation in French and American oak for 18 months before bottling. The resultant releases are noted as being fruit-driven wines of much flavour and substance, proven over the years to develop added character when cellared. Varietally expressive with ample plum and blackberry fruits, there is warm earth and spicy savouriness that immediately appeals with a backbone of fine, opulent tannins and a rich, persistent finish.

Tahbilk’s vineyards are grouped along the banks of the Goulburn River, a branch of it which flows through the estate. The vines are grown at around 134 metres elevation of gently undulating and flat terrain. The soils are sandy loam with ferric oxide content, which vary from very fine sand near the anabranch to denser loams on the plains. Tahbilk has Shiraz vineyards dating back from the 1860s to the 1990s. The oldest surviving block is the ‘1860 block’; planted on its own roots in sandy soils, which has made it impossible for phylloxera to colonise the vine roots.
