  • 2019 Laissez Faire Syrah, Larry Cherubino Wine Republic Heros Red Wine

2019 Laissez Faire Syrah, Larry Cherubino

    £2250

Laissez-Faire means “let it be” and this reflects the hands-off approach that winemaker Larry Cherubino uses when making this striking Syrah.  A bouquet of black cherries is enveloped in subtle mineral nuances and supporting oak spice. Red flowery fruit flavours dominate, with subtle slate-like minerality following through onto the elegant palate, all framed by fine tannins through to a long finish.

While inspiration has been taken from organics, biodynamics and natural winemaking practices, the Laissez Faire range could be called ‘natural wines’; Larry Cherubino likes to think of them as “post-natural” wines. Believing in healthy and sustainable vineyard practices, Larry grows all his own grapes and can account for their provenance and natural status. While copper is allowed in organic viticulture, minimal copper treatments are used here. The grapes for this wine are grown in the subregions of Frankland River and Porongurup, in the Great Southern, which are considered to be two of the most distinctive viticulture areas in Australia.

  • 2017 Shiraz ‘Watervale Single Vineyard’, Jim Barry Wine Republic Heros Red Wine

2017 Shiraz ‘Watervale Single Vineyard’, Jim Barry

    £2250

This 2017 Shiraz comes from a single-vineyard sourced from the Florita vineyard in Watervale.  The Shiraz block is planted on a gentle northwest facing slope that takes full advantage of Clare Valley climate.

It is an opulent wine with expressive aromas of rich, bright red fruits that are supported by classic Clare Valley spice. Beautifully structured with fine savoury tannins and terrific length of vibrant fruit on the palate.  This is not your typical Clare Valley Shiraz!   The opulent nature of the wine could be due to winemaking that saw one-third of the grapes being co-fermented with 15% of whole bunch fruit to impart complexity and an aromatic lift to the wine.   The wine then went through malolactic fermentation (a process where tart malic acid in wine converts to softer, creamier lactic acid) before being transferred to oak barrels for 12 months of ageing.

    A terrific mouthful of wine!

  • 2020 ‘Summer’ Wild Ferment Sauvignon Blanc, Harry HartmanWhite Wine

2020 ‘Summer’ Wild Ferment Sauvignon Blanc, Harry Hartman

    £2250

This knockout wild Ferment Sauvignon Blanc from Harry Hartman Wines is made from fruit picked in the premium regions of Elgin and Bot River.  Elgin fruit has a higher level of acidity adding to the more citrus notes and making the wine more linear. Botrivier fruit is more rounded, with bigger tropical notes.

In the glass, the wine paints a picture of a basket filled with freshly picked kiwi and yellow plums. The fruit is clean and welcoming, backed with a perpetual herbaceous note that blows off as the wine evolves in your glass, leaving hints of spice and a creamy note of old-fashioned lemon candy. The palate is a continuation of the nose with that almond skin character giving way to a briny texture and taut acidity leaping over your tongue.

Located to the west of the coastal mountain range, the Leyda Valley’s finely textured soils are developed from granite rock on the coastal batholith formed 200 million years ago during the Jurassic period.
