2021 Sino da Romaneira, Quinta da Romaneira

    £2395

The wine presents a lively red colour. Fresh and elegant with seductive fruit, balanced and engaging with soft tannins, characteristic of this wine, which express the beauty of the Quinta da Romaneira’s wild flora.

The grapes for the Sino are sourced from various sites within the quinta, with a preponderance of Touriga Francesa and Tinta Roriz. The soils at Quinta da Romaneira are predominantly schist, with a laminated structure that facilitates drainage and allows the vine roots to penetrate deeply to reach nutrients and moisture. This type of soil is poor in organic matter, which promotes low yields per vine, favouring high quality grapes. The steep slope of the slopes also contributes to excellent sun exposure, ideal for the ripening of the grapes.

    2020 Merlot, Groot Constantia

    £2400

Groot Constantia is the oldest wine estate in South Africa and has a remarkable history including having King Louis Philippe of France as their best customer!   Today they make exceptional wines in a sub-region of the Western cape called Constantia which is near Cape Town.

This 2020 is a rich and ripe Merlot delivering aromas of sun-ripened plum, mocha and dark chocolate enveloped in delicate hints of oak spice, tobacco and cinnamon. The palate of ripe black fruits and subtle oak are framed by firm tannins through to a lingering finish.   Drink now to 2030

The vineyards are located on the steep valley on the eastern side of Table Mountain. The grapes come predominantly from a block that varies between 67 and 95 metres above sea level, on slopes that are south to southeast facing. The climate is Mediterranean with cooling breezes from the Atlantic Ocean encouraging balance and complexity in the grapes. The average rainfall is approximately 1,100mm per annum. The soils are Clovelly and Glenrosa- a gravelly soil with low fertility. The climate, combined with the cool southern slopes and deep mountain soils provide the ideal setting for the production of this top-quality wine.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2016-chenin-verdelho-momento/">2016 Chenin/Verdelho, Momento</a> White Wine

    2016 Chenin/Verdelho, Momento

    £2450
Marelise Niemann, winemaker and owner of Momento thinks that Chenin Blanc without Verdelho is like dancing without music.
Verdelho adds the zing and zest to the blend, giving it that extra twist of freshness, energy and rhythm. The Chenin blanc grapes come from 40-year-old, dry land farmed bush vines in the Swartland, and a 36-year-old vineyard from Bot River, called ‘Langbene’ (Long legs) – named after the unique and extremely long trunks of the vines.  The Verdelho grapes come from Voor-Paardeberg, grown in decomposed granite and clay as well as a vineyard in Bot River grown in Bokkeveld shale. The decomposed granite soils produce a rich, generous and broader palate, while the shale and clay soil from Bot River produces an austere, focused, and texture driven wine. A combination of these two regions, together with the Verdelho that adds the freshness, combine to create a well-balanced wine, both rich and generous and elegant and well-poised, with a mineral focus and bright acidity.

A nose of white peach, lemon rind and jasmine with green melon, green apple and a crystalline, wet stone minerality adding freshness and focus. Crunchy, puckering acidity supports a full-bodied, mouth-coating palate with brioche and tart lemon curd leading to a long, pithy finish.

Long and yet light and bright.

The grapes for this wine are harvested from the Altima vineyard, situated in Elandskloof, an isolated valley north of Villiersdorp which is 5km wide and is surrounded by a steep mountain range that rises 1km from the valley floor. The steep topography causes the valley to receive less direct sunlight due to the overshadowing mountains, which together with the elevation of 600 to 900m equates to a very cool climate for the valley. is unique terroir produces wines with high natural acidity and upfront aromas. Grapes are harvested much later than other sites in the Western Cape, with harvest usually starting in late February/early March.

    2021 Syrah ‘TH’, Undurraga

    £2450

Cool climate Syrah with spicy, peppery aromas and notes of fresh wild herbs and subtle tar surround a core of fresh raspberries and wild berries. Mineral on the palate, with a tense tannin structure and a vibrant acidity that gives freshness and identity to the wine.

Located to the west of the coastal mountain range, the Leyda Valley has gently rolling hills, exposing the vines to varying levels of sunlight and drainage profiles. The soils are developed from granite rock on the coastal batholith formed 200 million years ago in the Jurassic period. For this wine, the grapes were selected from a small plot of Syrah grown in finely textured soils. The top layer is shallow loamy clay with poor fertility, followed by a sedimentary ‘crack’ clay profile. The subsoil is decomposed granite rock with a diverse mineral structure. The plot is densely planted with 10,000 vines per hectare of French Clones 174 and 470 on a north-facing slope exposed to the sun. The yield was two kilograms per plant, which favours the concentration necessary to achieve a wine with great richness.

A vibrant Mencia, with aromatic notes of lilac, violet, fresh red fruits interlaced with mineral overtones. Harmoniously balanced, with restrained tannins and a textured palate, full of fleshy red fruits and a savoury character on the long, intense finish.

The grapes come from a single vineyard ‘Viñas O Val’ in the DO Bierzo, in the north-western Spanish province of Castilla León. Low yielding 60-year-old vines are grown in clay soils with ‘Coios’, a Spanish term for boulders, which gave this wine its name. These old vines have deep root systems which nourish the vines imparting complex flavours in the resulting wine. Planted at a density of 4,000 vines per hectare, the vines are grown at an altitude of 550 to 590 metres above sea level. 2022 Devils Staircase Pinot Noir, Rockburn

    £2450

This Pinot Noir bursts with flavours of red cherry, cranberry and bramble fruit. Rounded and fruity on the palate, with supple tannins and a very moreish finish. This is devilishly good.

The Devil’s Staircase wines are inspired by the winding road leading from Queenstown to Kingston along the shores of Lake Wakatipu. Sourced from several Central Otago vineyards, the Devil’s Staircase Pinot Noir takes the willing down into the realm of decadence and Bacchanalian delights. Here, everything is pleasure spiced up with a bit of naughty.   The unrelenting Central Otago environment tortures the vines whose twisted limbs produce a wine worthy of absolution; strong and sensual with lashings of dark fruit, sinfully succulent and devilishly good.

    2022 Carmenère ‘TH’, Undurraga

    £2450

Head winemaker Rafael Urrejola has spent a great deal of time understanding the diversity of Chile’s vineyard sites; the result is the emblematic ‘Terroir Hunter’ range.

This is smooth as silk Carmenère with an intense expression of fresh raspberries and cherries, complemented by subtle hints of green pepper. On the palate, notes of dark chocolate and sweet berried fruit are enveloped in smooth, elegant tannins and a vibrant acidity that lends a fresh, juicy finish.

The climate in Peumo suits Carménère; its latitude ensures high temperatures throughout the ripening period, but its proximity to the Pacific Ocean results in gentle breezes that encourage the grapes to retain acidity, resulting in fresh flavours and aromas in the wine. The vineyard is situated at 171 metres above sea level, where the red clay soils are one metre deep and retain moisture to nourish the vines.

    2021 Cabernet Franc ‘TH’, Undurraga

    £2450

Head winemaker Rafael Urrejola has spent a great deal of time understanding the diversity of Chile’s vineyard sites; the result is the emblematic ‘Terroir Hunter’ range.

In the glass this Cabernet Franc has an intense ruby red colour and great clarity, it expresses fresh aromas of black fruits such as blackberries, blueberries and blackcurrant mixed with floral tones such as violets. On the palate it is fresh, intense and elegant, firm tannins, with a fruity and unctuous medium palate. The finish is long and persistent.

The Cabernet Franc grapes were sourced from a selected vineyard planted exclusively for this range in Catemito, in the Valle de Maipo. 2022 Grand Malbec, Piattelli Vineyards

    £2450

A rich and inky Malbec full of aromas of blueberries, cedar and spice. Opulent and textured, with wonderful fruit concentration and beautifully integrated oak, through to a long, persistent finish.

From high in the Andes surrounding Salta come Piattelli’s Cafayate wines, grown at an elevation of over 1,795 metres. The distinctively colourful Argentinian mountains are formed of many geological layers. The splendour of this area is the pure water and extreme thermal amplitudes. The diurnal temperature differences create longer ripening periods, which concentrate the flavours in the grapes, with the cooler evenings encouraging a balancing freshness. Additionally, the grapes develop thicker skins to cope with the intensity of the UV rays at this altitude, which further concentrates the flavours in the wine. This makes this not only one of the most beautiful but also one of the premier grape-growing regions in the world.
