  Valli Vineyards, founded in 1998 by renowned winemaker Grant Taylor, is dedicated to expressing the unique terroirs of Central Otago through single-vineyard winemaking. Grant is a four-time winner of the prestigious International Winemaker of the Year award at the IWC in London.  He has been instrumental in shaping Central Otago’s global Pinot Noir reputation over the last 4 decades.  Since 2015, winemaker Jen Parr has collaborated with Taylor, bringing a shared commitment to producing wines that embody honesty, integrity, and a true sense of place.

  The 2022 Valli Waitaki Pinot Noir is a wine of striking poise and aromatic complexity, capturing the unique energy of this limestone-rich region. It shimmers in the glass with a translucent garnet hue, inviting you into a beguiling bouquet of wild strawberry, pomegranate, and pink pomelo, delicately threaded with wild thyme, cedar, and a smoky hint of gunflint. The palate is equally compelling, with layers of cardamom, allspice, damson plum, tart cherry, and fresh strawberry unfurling in seamless succession.   Ten Minutes by Tractor needs little introduction, nor does the man in charge, Martin Spedding. A gently-spoken man with a background in finance and IT, in 2002, he finally acknowledged the fact that his true passion lay in wine. Despite his origins in New South Wales, he simply couldn’t get enough of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and would travel down to Victoria to immerse himself in Australia’s heartland of these noble varieties. In 2003, he visited one of his favourite small wineries on Mornington Peninsula and was delighted to discover that it was for sale. Without a moment’s hesitation, he snapped it up, and so began Martin’s journey with Ten Minutes by Tractor.

  The 2021 McCutcheon Pinot Noir is a captivating expression of the Mornington Peninsula’s cool-climate terroir. On the nose, it unveils a symphony of rose petals, sweet rhubarb, spiced sumac, bramble, and autumnal characters. The palate is equally alluring, with dried red berries, plum, and strawberry gliding across, complemented by blood orange and plum pudding notes. A delicate red wine jus leads into a savoury edge of leather, cinnamon spice, and finely detailed tannins, culminating in a complex and finely structured finish.

  2011 Meres Pinot Noir, Kooyong

  The vineyard name originates from the surrounding water bodies – the dams which flank the block on all sides.

  Its greater exposure to the north, west and east limits the vigour of the vines, while the sandier soil reduces water stress compared to Ferrous and Haven. These factors combine to make the wine silken, perfumed and approachable when young, as well as having flavour concentration and ageing potential.   This 2011 is full of life with red cherry, redcurrant, alluring rose petal and savoury notes dominating the nose and palate.  The tannins have softened over the years but are fine and silky.

  2009 Haven Pinot Noir, Kooyong

  Kooyong’s Haven Pinot Noir is a great Pinot Noir and exceptional with a few years of age

  Almost indistinguishable from a Premier Cru Vosne Romanée, this gradually uncurls with swirling to reveal focused spicy, smokey, gamey aromas, permeate in the mouth with hints of anise and heather over succulent black cherry fruit. Well-structured, with richness and a warm, enveloping texture.

  Planted exclusively to Pinot Noir, the Haven Vineyard is the most sheltered site, being bordered by trees on both the North and South, hence the vineyard name.  The soil is loam over clay, with less sand than Meres and fewer sandstone pebbles than Ferrous.

  This is real WOW wine and if your a Chenin Blanc fan then one sip and you will fall in love.  It displays a breathtaking tension between the tangy acidity of the latitude, bright ‘mineralité’ of the site and luscious honeyed ripeness with fabulous complexity from its magnificent steep, southerly aspect.

  This wine represents the tête de cuvée (top of the range) of Pithon-Paillé. The Coteau des Treilles vineyard located in Beaulieu-sur-Layon was abandoned after World War Two as it became to difficult to farm by tractor, which became all the rage in the post-war period. Seeing the potential of this great vineyard, the family purchased all 70 parcels from 25 different owners over the course of 3 1/2 years eventually achieving a monopole of this great Anjou site.

  Champagne Collet 1er Cru Blanc de Blancs NV

  An assemblage of six Chardonnay parcels from the best Premiers and Grands Crus of the Champagne region.  The three pillars of this Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru come from the three famous Grands Crus of Champagne – Avize, Oger and Chouilly. Avize is a rich Cru which brings power; Oger offers tenderness and Chouilly imparts elegance and finesse to the blend. These limestone soil Crus naturally present iodised notes and citrus aromas. The assemblage is balanced by blending Chardonnay from Villers-Marmery, a very mineral Cru with smoky notes making the wine round and light, while fruit from the Crus of Vaudemange and Trépail complete the assemblage.

  Vivacious, with a light texture this 1er Cru delivers citrus notes of Sicilian lemon and lime, with hints of lemon tart on puff pastry. Nuances of white pepper, liquorice and smoke add to the kaleidoscope of flavours. This is fresh, taut, complex and full of finesse with a beautifully long finish.

  The Blanc de Blancs 1er Cru was aged for a minimum of five years in Collet’s centuries-old limestone cellars.

  An intensely flavoured but elegant Amarone, with concentrated flavours of ripe blueberries, blackberries and cherries, enhanced by spicy oak. The palate is rich, full bodied and complex, with beautiful balance and a long, elegant finish.

  Punta 470 takes its name from the altitude of Ca’Rugate’s six hectare estate vineyard in the hills around Montecchia di Crosara, where the grapes are grown at 470 metres above sea-level. This elevation allows the grapes to retain balancing acidity to the concentrated fruits and enables Ca’ Rugate to produce a wine which is elegant and food-friendly.

  2018 ‘Ex Machina’ Sparkling Rosé, Sugrue South Downs

  Sugrue South Downs is the personal project of celebrated English sparkling winemaker Dermot Sugrue.  His highly acclaimed and multi-award-winning sparkling wine ‘The Trouble with Dreams’ is stuff of legend and we think the best sparkling wine in the UK.

  This his Sugrues very first rosé, a wine named “Rosé ex Machina” because of its serendipitous conception: 2016 was so fine in quality yet so meagre in quantity that Dermot had decided to make just one wine, putting all of his fruit into the prestige “Cuvée Dr Brendan O’Regan”. Then, just as the harvest was coming to an end and in Dermot’s own words, “the God’s intervened” and he was offered some outstanding fruit from the beautiful Jenkyn Place Vineyard in Hampshire.   From these grapes “Rosé ex Machina” was born.

  Just 4,500 bottles and 200 magnums were produced.

  2020 Rod and Spur Shiraz-Cabernet, Rockford

  This incredible blend of Shiraz & Cabernet Sauvignon is a uniquely Australian blend that pays homage to the great Aussie wines of yesteryear.    With plenty of sweet spice and brambly black fruit comes a concentrated blackcurrant and vanilla aroma, followed by a rich, full-bodied palate. The flavour is full of crunchy black fruit with soft tannins, refreshing acidity and subtle vanilla sweetness.

  The name Rod & Spur acknowledges the contribution of Rockford’s growers who spend the cold Barossa winters hand-pruning their vines in the traditional rod and spur method. This wine is a return to the great Australian reds of the 1950s and 60’s, when Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon blends dominated the premium market. This very Australian wine is not common in any other region of the world.

  Like all Rockford reds, the grapes for this wine go through an 1880s Bagshaw de-stemmer, are open fermented and then gently basket pressed. All components are aged separately in a combination of seasoned American and French oak hogsheads and large oak casks for two years. This allows the tannins to soften and colours and flavours to consolidate, before being bottled under the highest quality cork.

  2021 Estate Zinfandel, Chateau Montelena

  Chateau Montelena is one of Napa Valley’s most iconic estates, famously catapulted to international acclaim after its Chardonnay triumphed at the 1976 Judgment of Paris. Located at the base of Mount Saint Helena in Calistoga, the estate benefits from a unique combination of volcanic soils, cool mountain air, and a long growing season, which together contribute to wines of remarkable depth and finesse.

  The 2021 Estate Zinfandel from Chateau Montelena is a masterclass in balance, showcasing the winery’s signature restraint and the varietal’s expressive character. In the glass, the wine opens with an aromatic medley of ripe blackberries, raspberry compote, and wild plum, underscored by hints of cracked pepper, sweet tobacco, and baking spices. The palate is vibrant and layered, offering bursts of red currant and brambly fruit framed by silky tannins and a bright acidity that lends freshness and lift. Notes of cedar, cocoa, and earthy minerality emerge on the long, seamless finish, reflecting the complexity of Montelena’s Calistoga terroir.

  This is top-tier Zinfandel.

  Joseph Perrier Cuvée Royale Brut Rosé is a sophisticated champagne made from a blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Meunier grapes. It has a lovely salmon pink colour with a fine and persistent perlage. The nose is complex and intense, with aromas of red berries, strawberries, and raspberries, followed by hints of flowers and spices. On the palate, the wine is fresh and lively, with a perfect balance between fruitiness, acidity, and creamy texture. The finish is long and elegant, leaving a pleasant and refreshing sensation. This champagne is ideal as an aperitif or paired with seafood, sushi, or light desserts.

  ‘Aged on the lees for 3-to-5 years in cellars dug out of ancient Gallo-Roman chalk pits, this rosé Champagne is serious, and seriously delicious. Displaying a medium ‘vieux rose’ hue and narrow cordon, the wine exudes summer pudding fruits and fresh bread notes. On the palate, the wine shows finesse in its light body, zippy acidity and ‘crackling’ mousse texture. Nicely balanced with good length.   Grand Cru Brut Rose Champagne, Champagne Pierre Moncuit

  An old estate that has been family-run since 1889 located in the Grand Cru village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger in the Côte des Blancs. They have 20 hectares of excellently located vines under the guidance of talented winemaker Nicole Moncuit, who is always determined to pull the best out of the vintage with no single style. This rosé Champagne is crafted primarily from Chardonnay with a smaller proportion of Pinot Noir, following traditional méthode champenoise. Nicole focuses on expressing the terroir’s unique characteristics and highlighting the vintage’s unique character to make expressive, deep, and complex champagnes. While this is labeled as nonvintage, it comes from a single year, making it an incredible buy for Grand Cru Rose Champagne.

  The wine offers up a lovely aromatic constellation of pomegranate, rhubarb, pâtissière, chalky soil tones and a lovely floral topnote redolent of violets. On the palate the wine is bright, focused and full-bodied, with good depth at the core, good soil undertow, frothy mousse and a long, well balanced finish.
