As one of the pioneers of Chilean Chardonnay, Cousiño Macul has been cultivating this noble variety since the late 19th century, when vine cuttings were brought directly from Burgundy, France, and rooted in the sunlit soils of the Maipo Valley. Today, this heritage lives on in a wine that reflects both tradition and a vibrant, modern expression of place.

In the glass, the 2022 Chardonnay gleams with a golden hue edged by subtle green highlights. The 2023 Awatere Sauvignon Blanc from Spoke Wines is a striking expression of coastal Marlborough, shaped by the cooler, wind-kissed climate of the Awatere Valley. Spoke is the visionary collaboration between Liam Steevenson MW and Marlborough winemaker Ben Glover, whose decades of experience in the region are channelled into site-focused, expressive wines that reflect both land and hand.

This wine is sourced from the family’s vineyard along the Opawa River, where 14 hectares of vines, including Sauvignon Blanc, grow in fertile loam on north-facing slopes at 120 metres elevation, just under two miles from the sea. The coastal influence and prevailing breezes create a distinct microclimate, cooler than the rest of Marlborough, lending the wines their signature saline edge, lifted aromatics, and refined texture.

In the glass, the 2023 Awatere Sauvignon Blanc is bright and enticing. Aromas of white peach, gooseberry, and citrus leap forward, with layers of mineral tension and a sherbet-like vibrancy adding depth and dimension. The palate is taut and elegant, favouring precision over exuberance, with a chalky, saline finish that reflects the vineyard’s maritime proximity. This is not your typical tropical style Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. It is more restrained, more European in style.

Domaine Lafage, situated between Perpignan and the Spanish border in Côtes Catalanes, Roussillon, has been run by Jean-Marc and Eliane Lafage since 2001.

A juicy, pale rosé, with strawberry, citrus and orange peel aromas. Ample minerality as well as a medium-bodied, racy profile on the palate, to be enjoyed young and fresh.

The vines for this wine are cultivated on stony soil (galets roulés) close to the Mediterranean coast giving beautiful maritime freshness. The average vine age is 25 years old for the Mourvedre and 75 for the Grenache.

The region experiences scorching, dry summers followed by cool, wet winters, creating an environment that maximises the development of flavours and aromas in the grapes. Chenin Blanc is a standout varietal here and thrives whether grown on trellises or as bush vines. The soils and dry land conditions are particularly suited for bush vine cultivation, resulting in small berries bursting with layered flavours, rich colour and soft tannin structures. 33% of the fruit for this wine comes from old, low-yielding bush vines which produce concentrated fruit. The vineyards are sustainably cultivated and the grapes are hand-harvested.

The region is enclosed by three mountain ranges between the cool Atlantic Ocean and the warm Klein Karoo. The climate provides an ideal balance for a long hang time and a slower ripening of the grapes. The warm, ample sunshine allows the full development of the grape’s sugars and aromatic flavour, while the cooling influence from the surrounding mountains help retain natural acidity in the grapes, ensuring a fresh and vibrant wine profile.

The Breedekloof Valley is surrounded by steep mountain slopes and the meandering Breede River which flows through the wide fertile valley. Breedekloof lies to the west of Worcester, with the Slanghoek Mountains marking its western border and the Badsberg Mountain dividing the Breedekloof area in two. The mountains have a moderating effect on the climate, with mountain shadows providing respite for the vines from the hot sun, by shortening the days and bringing cooler nights. These diurnal temperature differences create a long, slow ripening period, which results in ripe flavours and natural balancing acidity.
