2020 Rioja ‘Vino De Pueblo’ Villabuena V1BN4, Badiola

    £3750

Badiola is the creation of 2 Masters of Wine, Andreas Kubach and Sam Harrop along with txakoli producer Gorka Izagirre.   Andreas and Sam along with Winemaker Tao Plantón craft modern Rioja wines with an emphasis on-site rather than how long it has aged in an oak barrel.  The winemaking philosophy is to obtain very pure, fresh and well-textured wines that reflect their origin.

This 2020 V1BN4 is precise and pure with red berry aromas leading to a supple and elegant palate, with spicy nuances, finely grained tannins and an amazing flow through to the finish.

Current Denominación de Origen regulations in Rioja only permit the use of a village name on the label by the location of the winery (i.e. the building and not the vineyards) thus the wine from the Villabuena vineyards is marketed as V1BN4.

The grapes come from carefully selected hillside parcels situated at around 500 metres elevation surrounding the village of Villabuena. The area is protected by the Sierra Cantabria and the mesoclimate imparts the wines with excellent balance between freshness, elegance and good fruit concentration. The bush vines are planted in limestone soils and are cultivated with respect for the environment, using minimal sprays of copper and sulphur when required.

2020 Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Beaune`Sous Eguisons`, Domaine Jean-Noël Gagnard

    £3795

Caroline Lestimé, winemaker at Jean-Noël Gagnard, decided to plant Chardonnay vines on this plot of the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, back in 2007.   The vineyard is in La Rochepot, on an embankment overlooking and bordering the western part of the Saint-Aubin appellation Le Ban. The name “Sous Éguisons” refers to the cliff above the vineyard. The cliff offers protection from the north winds, which is a significant advantage given how harsh the climate is and how bitter the spring frosts are at this altitude. The natural growth cycle of the vines is also slower and the grapes mature a full week later than at lower levels.

The wine itself is a revelation, pure, pristine and delicious.  The matchstick mineral nose shows pure lemony fruit with a hint of florality. The palate is linear and precise with taut lemony fruit and a fine tangy, stony mineral quality. There’s just the faintest hint of spicy, toasty oak, but the real theme here is pure, vital lemon fruit with great precision and lovely integrated acidity.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2020-maestro-merlot-malbec-cabernet-sauvignon-pegasus-bay/">2020 ‘Maestro’ Merlot, Malbec & Cabernet Sauvignon, Pegasus Bay</a>

2020 ‘Maestro’ Merlot, Malbec & Cabernet Sauvignon, Pegasus Bay

    £4100

Pegasus Bay is a family-owned estate in North Canterbury’s Waipara Valley, founded by the Donaldson family, pioneers of the region’s modern wine scene. With over three decades of winemaking experience, Pegasus Bay has established a reputation for producing complex, expressive wines that reflect both vineyard and vintage.  Maestro is part of the reserve series of wines from Pegasus Bay and represents the best of their Bordeaux fruit. As with all their reserve wines, they are only made in exceptional years.

The 2020 ‘Maestro’ is a bold and captivating blend, marrying power with precision. In the glass, it reveals a deep, brooding purple hue. Aromatically, it leads with a rush of dark, savoury intensity, black forest fruits layered with earthy mushroom, aged soy, and hints of smoked game. Complex nuances of liquorice, eucalyptus, mixed spice, and tree moss enrich the bouquet, giving it both intrigue and gravitas. On the palate, the wine is robust and muscular, with a coiled energy that unfolds into bold tannins and vibrant acidity. This formidable structure is balanced by decadent fruit weight and seamless concentration, lending the wine breadth and a richly textured mouthfeel. The finish is expansive and persistent, carrying through savoury detail and spice.

The vines used for ‘Maestro’ are grown on free-draining, north-facing terraces in the lee of the Teviotdale Range, which shelters them from harsh coastal winds and fosters a unique mesoclimate. The vineyard’s stony “Glasnevin Gravels” soil, composed of greywacke, loam, and silt, limits vine vigour and encourages low yields of intensely flavoured fruit. These conditions, coupled with warm days and some of the valley’s coolest nights, result in a long, even ripening period, allowing the Bordeaux varietals to develop full phenolic ripeness while retaining fresh acidity. Many vines are over 35 years old and remain planted on their own roots, contributing depth and authenticity to the wines.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2020-estate-chardonnay-paringa-estate/">2020 Estate Chardonnay, Paringa Estate</a>

    2020 Estate Chardonnay, Paringa Estate

    £4200

The Estate series from Paringa is a step up from the Peninsula wines and represent the unique Paringa “style” upon which their reputation has been built.   Expressive aromas of lemon sherbet, white peach, and hints of struck match, lead onto a racy palate. Vibrant fruit flavours are framed with crisp acidity which gives the wine a long, linear finish.

The fruit for this wine came from the ‘Estate’ vineyard, and the Callanan’s Road vineyard. The fruit comes from low-yielding vines, some of which are over 30 years old. They are grown in the typical red volcanic, iron-rich soil known as Ferrasol. The vines are sustainably cultivated, respecting the balance of the soil and the biodiversity of the environment.

2020 Syrah, The Language Of Yes, Randall Grahm

    £4350

Randall Grahm is a legend of California winemaking, renowned for his trailblazing work with Rhône Varieties in the Central Coast. ‘The Language of Yes’ is his latest project, an attempt to capture the essence of Old World wines through the ‘uniqueness of the vineyards and the (mostly) sunny disposition of California’.

This is a deliciously complex Syrah, marked by its lively acidity and layers of vivid pepperiness, black olive, violets, liquorice and white flowers. Smooth and textured with a long finish.

The Syrah and Viognier grapes come from the single vineyard ‘Rancho Réal’, in the Santa Maria Valley which is one of the coolest sites where vines are successfully grown in California. Here, the vines enjoy a particularly long growing season, thus developing an impressive degree of complexity and articulation. For example, the formation of ‘Rotundone’, the molecule that imparts the peppery quality to wines, is favoured by cooler climates, lower light conditions and a long hang-time on the vine.

2020 ‘The Trouble with Dreams’ Brut, Sugrue South Downs

    £4900

The Trouble with Dreams is a classic blend of barrel-fermented Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, boasting great purity and elegance, with lemon and apple aromas leading to a palate of delicate stone fruit and refreshingly crisp acidity. This is long, complex and absolutely delicious.

A portion of the fruit for this vintage was sourced from the Storrington Priory Vineyard. The majority of grapes came from the exceptional Mount Harry Vineyard near Lewes, in East Sussex. Both of the vineyards are located in Sussex, sitting above the 50th parallel and are influenced by a cool coastal climate. The vineyards have east and southeasterly aspects respectively, encouraging the maximum exposure to the sun, assisting ripening in this capricious climate. The soils are dominated by South Downs chalk, which provides superior drainage for the vines, as well as imparting great elegance and finesse to the wines.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2020-chardonnay-clonal-selection-kershaw/">2020 Chardonnay ‘Clonal Selection’, Kershaw</a>

    2020 Chardonnay ‘Clonal Selection’, Kershaw

    £4950

An exceptional Chardonnay from the amazing cool-climate region of Elgin.  Restrained, mineral style focussed on elegance with a white fruit character, some oatmeal and some complexity gained from percipient applied wood.  Only 15982 bottles and 70 Magnums.

The grapes come from eight to 10 small parcels of vineyards in several locations in the Elgin Valley. Elgin is the coolest wine region in South Africa and is situated on an inland, hexagonal-shaped plateau, at an altitude of 300 metres. The region is surrounded by mountains and lies just over six miles from the Atlantic Ocean, which brings occasional sea-borne mists. February is the hottest month of the year, with daytime temperatures peaking at 23°C and night-time temperatures dipping to 14°C. The benefit of this cooler climate is that the grape cluster stays connected to its roots for longer, so it develops complex characteristics and achieves physiological ripeness more gradually, resulting in lower sugar levels and consequently lower alcohol levels.
