This vintage also happens to one of Winemaker, Vanya Cullens favourite wines.
Red WineAmon-Ra Shiraz is an iconic wine that epitomises Ben Glaetzer’s passion to create wines that are full flavoured, multi layered and intense but still elegant, stylish and finely balanced.
Made from exceptional old vine fruit was sourced from the famed Ebenezer sub district at the northern tip of the Barossa Valley. These old vines are between 100-110 years old.
in the glass this wine has a perfumed nose, with layers of violet, spice, liquorice and vanilla. The palate flavours are very pronounced, with a very spicy back palate. Mouthfilling flavours of black pepper, blackberry, spice, and plum overlaid with cedar. The tannins are fine, yet slightly chalky but perfectly balanced. Very long aftertaste of black pepper, spice and plum.
In Egyptian mythology, Amon-Ra is considered to be the king of all gods. The temple of Amon-Ra was believed to be the first temple to ever plant a monoculture vineyard to produce wine for the citizens of the temple.
The eye on front of the label is the all-seeing eye of Horus or wedjat (“whole one”) – a powerful Egyptian symbol of protection. It is represented as a figure with six parts, corresponding to what Egyptians regarded as the six senses; touch, taste, hearing, sight, smell and thought.

This 2002 is made from gnarled old Shiraz vines of up to 100+ years old. In the glass, the wine displays aromas of ripe dark plum, blackberry, some meaty earth like characters, liquorice and spice showing good complexity and intensity. Rich and opulently textured the palate delivers mouth-filling flavours of ripe blackberry, liquorice and spice with a light earthy leather-like overlay. Velvet smooth tannins with long blackberry, liquorice, leather and spice aftertaste.
Red WineThis is one of the most iconic wines in Australia and world renowned as an exceptional example of cool climate Shiraz. The Graveyard Vineyard is the jewel in the Brokenwood crown, responsible for the company’s flagship wine. The vineyard was planted with Shiraz vines in 1970 – extremely heavy clay soils, yields are low, but fruit flavour is intense through the employment of meticulous vinification techniques.

Red WineThis is one of the worlds greatest wines.
The iconic ‘Armagh’ vineyard was named by the original Irish settlers who arrived in 1849 and called the lush, rolling hills after their homeland. In 1968, the vineyard was purchased by Jim Barry who planted it with Shiraz. Today these low-yielding vines produce less 27 hectolitres per hectare. The soil is sandy gravel and receives an average rainfall of 600 millimetres per year. The vineyard lies on a northwest-facing slope which acts as a natural sun trap, ensuring the fruit is always fully ripened at harvest time. The Clare Valley climate is continental with a high diurnal temperature difference, producing Shiraz with evenly ripened tannins and flavour.

Red WineThis is the first vintage of Yalumba’s Cabernet/Shiraz-based flagship wine, The Caley. Named after Fred Caley Smith, grandson of Yalumba founder Samuel Smith, who was a horticulturist that had a profound impact on the development of Yalumba’s vineyards. In the early 1890’s he spent 18 months trekking across the USA, Britain, Europe, the Middle East, India and Sri Lanka, observing and reporting on scientific and horticultural developments. His detailed letters, sent home every few days, underpinned the way the vineyards were managed and laid the foundations of sustainable viticulture at Yalumba today.
At the time of blending, the winemaking team made the following tasting notes … Deep garnet red in colour, fruit is at the core of the bouquet, all red and black currants – overlaid with savoury herbs, green spices, cedar and pipe tobacco. The palate is of sophisticated precision with a refined line. Long and textured it captures the concentrated flavours and presents them with a silken grace. Under all that supple, fleshy muscle, the wine has a strong spine, structured to last and last.
The Caley has been sourced from three outstanding vineyards of the Coonawarra and Barossa regions. The Ming D block of the Yalumba Coonawarra vineyard provides 52% of the Cabernet Sauvignon of the blend. This 2.7ha plot was planted in 1992 with two clones of Cabernet Sauvignon selected for structure and depth of flavour. This block differs from the ubiquitous Coonawarra terroir, with a higher content of clay than the other blocks on The Menzies Estate. The Shiraz is sourced from the Burgemeister “Linke Block” between Nuriootpa and Angaston. Planted in 1901, these Shiraz vines run east-west and are on a single wire trellis. The soil is a red-brown earth in the Light Pass loamy fine sand family. There is also a component that comes from the 1971 Yalumba Horseshoe Block in Eden Valley.

Red WineFrom a tiny four-hectare site in South Australia’s Eden Valley, overlooked by the spire of the historic Gnadenberg church, the Henschke family’s single-vineyard, low-yielding ancestor vine shiraz has quietly carved out a name alongside the great single vineyard wines of the world.
The 2005 and 2006 Henschke Hill of Grace, both rated by Stephen and Prue Henschke as exceptional vintages, have been kept aside in the family cellars in perfect cellaring conditions for collectors of back-vintage wines. They tell the story of a unique single vineyard, two distinct seasons and a family of winemakers. Both are drinking beautifully now but will age for a further 25 years.
This release is to compensate for their decision not to release a 2011 Hill of Grace wine owing to unsatisfactory vintage conditions. Johann explains: “I think you just do get some of those vintages every now and again, and rather than have nothing, we prefer to offer something to people who have been supporting us for a long time – restaurants and collectors who are really keen on the Hill of Grace story…So that’s why we went back into our cellar stock and found some extra bottles to release. It’s a really lovely box, which is specially designed for these two wines.”
The wines have guaranteed authenticity and provenance and will be available in a collector’s box with a booklet of stories, history, tasting notes, and technical information. The foreword has been written by James Halliday, in which he lifted the score of the 2006 Hill of Grace from 97 to 98 points after another look at the wines this year. 2005 remained at 96 points.
