2018 Rioja L4GD4 ‘Vino De Pueblo’ Laguardia, Badiola

    £3750

Badiola is the creation of 2 Masters of Wine, Andreas Kubach and Sam Harrop along with txakoli producer Gorka Izagirre.   Andreas and Sam along with Winemaker Tao Plantón craft modern Rioja wines with an emphasis on-site rather than how long it has aged in an oak barrel.  The winemaking philosophy is to obtain very pure, fresh and well-textured wines that reflect their origin.

This 2018 L4GD4 is a perfumed wine with delicate floral aromas of wild strawberries and violet giving way to a juicy palate with velvety tannins and an elegant finish.   Current regulations in Rioja only permit the use of a village name on the label by the location of the winery (i.e. the building and not the vineyards) thus the wine from the Laguardia vineyards is cleverly called L4GD4!

The grapes come from carefully selected parcels around the charming village of Laguardia, in Rioja Alavesa. Laguardia is situated on average at 640 metres above sea level and is open to the Ebro Valley with exposed sites. The mesoclimate here results in earlier ripening than other villages and produces approachable wines that are elegant, light and perfumed. The bush vines are planted in limestone soils and are cultivated with respect for the environment, using minimal sprays of copper and sulphur only when required.

2020 Rioja ‘Vino De Pueblo’ Villabuena V1BN4, Badiola

This 2020 V1BN4 is precise and pure with red berry aromas leading to a supple and elegant palate, with spicy nuances, finely grained tannins and an amazing flow through to the finish.

Current Denominación de Origen regulations in Rioja only permit the use of a village name on the label by the location of the winery (i.e. the building and not the vineyards) thus the wine from the Villabuena vineyards is marketed as V1BN4.

The grapes come from carefully selected hillside parcels situated at around 500 metres elevation surrounding the village of Villabuena. The area is protected by the Sierra Cantabria and the mesoclimate imparts the wines with excellent balance between freshness, elegance and good fruit concentration. The bush vines are planted in limestone soils and are cultivated with respect for the environment, using minimal sprays of copper and sulphur when required.

2016 Martelo Reserva Rioja, Torre de Oña

    £3800

The 2015 Finca Martelo Reserva is a juicy wine, thrilling the mouth with plentiful red and black fruit. A wise and careful ageing process in wood is appreciated in its seductive and well-balanced character and fresh sensations. It makes no attempt to hide the power of its modern profile but the character of a traditional wine and other more evolved touches are never far away. A top-quality Reserva wine produced by a winery steeped in expertise creating classic Rioja wines.

Head winemaker Julio Saenz refers to it as “our little Burgundy” because of how closely it represents this unique location. In fact, the wine itself is a field blend, 95% Tempranillo with 5% other varieties including Mazuelo, Garnacha, and even Viura. The chalk soils and 80-year-old vines at Torre de Oña produce a fuller, riper style of Rioja, while the high altitude and Atlantic influence in Rioja Alavesa keeps the wine fresh and elegant. This style is complemented by the use of 20% French oak and shorter maturation, alongside La Rioja Alta’s ultra-traditional methods such as racking by hand.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2019-reserva-vina-pedrosa/">2019 Reserva, Viña Pedrosa</a>

    2019 Reserva, Viña Pedrosa

    £4795

Vina Pedrosa is made by the Pérez Pascua family in the Ribera del Duero.  Brothers Benjamin, Manuel and Adolfo have been instrumental in transforming the sleepy town of Pedroso into one of Northern Spain’s most revered wine locations.

This 2019 Reserva is made from 35-year-old vines where every grape is carefully harvested by hand with an emphasis placed on low yields, to obtain beautifully balanced, highly focused grapes.

In the glass, it is bursting with aromas of dense, ripe fruit, vigorous herbs, menthol, spice and coffee.  The palate has wonderfully rounded fruit flavours with pleasing tannins and balanced acidity.  A steely undercurrent of minerality invigorates the palate.  Vina Pedrosa’s Reserva has already spent 2 years ageing in the barrel, and a further year in the bottle before release, priming it for your enjoyment.   This wine will age gracefully for up to 15 years.   We suggest decanting one hour before serving.

2018 Norte Rioja, Bodegas Y Viñedos Pujanza

    £5595

Inky ruby with violet highlights, Norte is intense from the start with aromas of blackcurrant, blueberry, and wild herbs layered with graphite, spice, and a subtle floral lift. The palate is powerful yet precise, dense dark fruit wrapped in taut acidity and firm, sculpted tannins. There’s a cool, stony thread running through, carrying the wine to a long, mineral-driven finish that speaks of its mountain terroir.

For when: you want Rioja with altitude, attitude, and staying power.
Pairs with: ribeye steak, roast venison, or slow-cooked lamb shoulder.
If this wine were a landscape, it’d be a dramatic limestone ridge against a clear blue sky.

Pujanza’s Norte comes from a single 2.7-hectare vineyard planted at 720m – one of the highest in Rioja Alavesa – where Tempranillo grows on thin limestone soils under extreme conditions. It’s a wine of focus, depth, and striking individuality, showing why Pujanza has become a benchmark for modern Rioja.
