    This exceptional top-tier English Sparkling wine was created from estate-grown Pinot Noir grapes.  Burnished gold and with a delicate mousse, this wine has a luxurious, vanilla cream and fine pastry nose, with flavours of fresh Alpine strawberry, toasted brioche and a smooth elegant finish.

    Simpsons Wine Estate is situated in the Elham Valley; an unspoilt seam in the North Downs of Kent where the contours of the land, the climate and the soil are excellent for viticulture. The intensely lime-rich chalk soil forms part of the same chalk ridge that stretches from southern England through Champagne and on to Burgundy. The grapes come from the Roman Road vineyard, named after the route the Romans first marched when invading England in AD 43.  They are grown on south-facing slopes, ensuring heat accumulation in the day and cold air drainage at night. The vineyard is less than eight miles from the coast, providing a crucial maritime influence insulating the fruit against intense temperature variations.

    Lismore Estate is based in Greyton within the Overberg region of the Western Cape of South Africa.  It’s here with the Sonderend mountains as a backdrop that winemaker & proprietor Samantha O’Keefe makes her fabulous wines.

    This incredible blend of Roussanne, Chardonnay and Viognier has fragrant aromas of yellow plum, spice and orange blossom that lead to a beautifully balanced palate, with crisp acidity, saline mineral notes and a lemongrass embroidered finish.

    The grapes come from the Greyton ward in the Western Cape, which has been designated by SAWIS in recognition of the special terroir of this region. The vineyards are planted on steep slopes in decomposed shale over clay at 300 metres above sea level, in the foothills of the Sonderend Mountain Range. Here the climate plays an important role: the low mean February temperature lends to an extended ripening period that results in a harvest that takes place three to four weeks later than traditional wine growing regions in South Africa. The Cuvée Blanc is a blend of 90% Roussanne, 5% Viognier, 5% Chardonnay; the Roussanne vines were grafted onto the trunks following the estate fire which destroyed vines in 2019. The roots are from 2016 and are planted on the coolest slope on the farm, which makes it the last variety to be picked. The intense citrus notes and the lingering finish are consistent hallmarks of Lismore’s specific terroir.

The second is on the north-east side of Monte Aribaldo in the commune of Treiso, 370 metres above sea level.

    This 2000 Grésy Chardonnay is a beautiful barrel-aged wine that is bursting with intense aromas of nougat, caramel and butter and hints of almond flakes.  In the mouth it has a textured honeyed feel with complex layers of exotic fruits with honeyed apricots buffered by the persistent minerality that gave the wine its very long finish.

    Grapes for this wine are sourced from San Ponzio Vineyard in the Commune of Barolo. They are grown at an altitude of 390-410 metres above sea level, on a clay-rich soil with an assortment of vines selected by Aldo Vaira in an old vineyard planted by his grandfather.

    Domaine de la Solitude’s wines are renowned for their characteristic elegance whilst expressing the true origins of their terroir.    This 2021 is a rich and opulent wine with ripe blackcurrant aromas layered with notes of the garrigue and cistus (a hardy shrub) flowers. Full-bodied but with a soft texture on the palate; this wine retains the estate’s characteristic elegance whilst embracing a modern style of winemaking. Ripe fruits combine with notes of cocoa and cherry and a hint of liquorice on the finish.

    Domaine de la Solitude has one of the best terroirs in Châteauneuf-du-Pape with its abundance of rounded quartzite stones from the Villafranchian period. These stones absorb heat during the day then radiate it at night, promoting full grape maturity. Yielding just 30 hectolitres per hectare, the vines are carefully managed throughout the year. The grapes are hand-harvested, once each variety has reached full maturity, which is based on tastings undertaken by an expert panel. The vineyard is farmed sustainably; the domain promotes and develops biodiversity in the vineyard by maintaining a flourishing wine-growing ecosystem.

The balance between warm and cool influences results in a long, slow ripening period, allowing the grapes to retain their acidity and lending excellent balance to the finished wines.

The sought-after Silex soils make up just 20% of the Sancerre appellation and are considered as ‘early-ripening soil’ as the flinty stones capture the heat from the sun during the day and radiate it at night, which helps to accelerate the maturity of the grapes. This is beneficial is such a cool, continental climate, where the Sauvignon Blanc retains its hallmark acidity, as it offers balance to the wines. The grapes for this cuvée come from hillside plots, where the vines are over 35 years old.

    Randall Grahm is a legend of California winemaking, renowned for his trailblazing work with Rhône Varieties in the Central Coast. ‘The Language of Yes’ is his latest project, an attempt to capture the essence of Old World wines through the ‘uniqueness of the vineyards and the (mostly) sunny disposition of California’.

    This is an elegant and layered Grenache with opulent notes of strawberry, rhubarb and a hint of blood orange enveloped in autumnal spiced notes of cloves and sandalwood with an extremely persistent finish.

    The Grenache grapes come from the single vineyard ‘Rancho Réal’, in the Santa Maria Valley which is one of the coolest sites where vines are successfully grown in California. Here, the vines enjoy a particularly long growing season, thus developing an impressive degree of complexity and articulation. For example, the formation of ‘Rotundone’, the molecule that imparts the peppery quality to wines, is favoured by cooler climates, lower light conditions and a long hang-time on the vine.
