2018 Estate Pinot Noir, Paringa Estate

    £6200

The 2018 vintage for Paringa was outstanding producing some of their best wine ever, yields were generous and of exceptional quality.  The ‘Estate’ pinot noir comes from a selection of Paringa’s best vineyard sites, and its signature style is elegance and complexity.

In the glass the 2018 has a complex and perfumed nose. Aromas of dark cherries mingle with hints of spice. The palate has a luscious core of dark cherry fruit, firm tannins, and a long savoury finish. The impressive structure of this wine will ensure considerable longevity.

The vineyard is set in the classic cool climate subregion of Red Hill at an altitude of 146 metres above sea level. The soil is a deep red volcanic clay that allows dry farming, without irrigation. Founder, Lindsay McCall, still tends to the vineyard characterised by its distinctive Lyre or ‘U’ trellis system which sits on an elaborate steel frame assembly.

  • 2020 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Xanadu Wine Republic Heros Red Wine

    2020 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Xanadu

    £6900

The Quintessential Margaret River Cabernet, with perfumed black fruit aromas and a generous, velvety palate packed with irresistible dark forest fruit and chocolate characters.

The Reserve range continues to be the best of what Xanadu are able to produce in a given vintage – single vineyard or otherwise. Fruit was predominantly sourced from two mature, dry grown vineyards; Timber Creek, in the Wilyabrup subregion; and Victory Point in the Treeton subregion of Margaret River and was supplemented with a small amount of Malbec from the Stevens Road vineyard in Wallcliffe. The resulting blend from these vineyards has married beautifully, proving again that sometimes ‘the whole is greater than the sum of its parts’.

  • 2010 Barbaresco Martinenga, Marchesi di GrésyRed Wine

2010 Barbaresco Martinenga, Marchesi di Grésy

    £6995

Barbaresco Martinenga takes its name from Marchesi di Grésy’s Martinenga vineyard situated in the commune of Barbaresco. This single-vineyard (of 11.93ha) has the shape of an amphitheatre, with Asili to the west and Rabaja to the north-east. These south-southwest facing vineyards have a favourable microclimate, which allows the production of high-quality grapes even in potentially difficult vintages.

‘Rose petals, violets and dark red cherries emerge from the 2010 Barbaresco Martinenga. In 2010 the Martinenga is quite supple, open and generous, with a kick of acidity and brightness on the finish, both signatures of the year. Beautiful, structured and powerful in the glass, yet also restrained in the classic Gresy style, the 2010 is a beauty. This is a fabulous showing.’ 92+ points, Antonio Galloni – Vinous

  • 2015 ‘Cuvée Boz’, Blanc de Blancs, SugrueChampagne & Sparkling Wine, English & Welsh Sparkling Wine, Sparkling

2015 ‘Cuvée Boz’, Blanc de Blancs, Sugrue

    £6995

This very limited production wine, Sugrue’s first Blanc de Blancs, is winemaker, Dermot’s tribute to his late brother Boz.  A complex and harmonious English sparkling wine, showing aromas of green apple and subtle hints of lemon thyme. Beautifully balanced and poised on the palate, which offers good weight and notes of citrus peel, orange zest and delicate hints of strawberry through to an elegant finish.

The grapes come from the Jenkyn Place single vineyard, nestled in the Hampshire Downs. The vineyard covers five hectares of vines, on land that was previously used for cultivating hops. The vineyards sit on sheltered, chalky, south-facing slopes at 100 metres above sea level, with greensand soils over marlstone, making them ideal for growing the high-quality grapes. The greensand topsoil at Jenkyn Place is scattered with eroded fragments of chalk, creating a distinctive -and possible unique combination, which is beginning to be translated into the wines. Chalky soils are associated with more gently-fruited wines of notable finesse, while greensand soils deliver a rounder fruit profile.

2016 Côte-Rôtie, Blonde du Seigneur, Georges Vernay

    £7250

Although Domaine Georges Vernay has built its reputation around its excellent Condrieu white wines, its reds should not be neglected, especially ones from the Côte-Rôtie. It is aromatic on the palate, with firm but smooth tannins, and a beautiful lingering finish. Its aromatic mouth, with well-built but smoothed tannins, continues in a beautiful final length. • 2015 The Paringa Chardonnay, Paringa Estate Wine Republic Heros White Wine

2015 The Paringa Chardonnay, Paringa Estate

    £7500

The Paringa Chardonnay is the estates top chardonnay wine and a single vineyard wine.

The bouquet has a complex floral lift of citrus and stone fruit, with some delicate lees aromas. Cool climate white fleshy stone fruits, citrus notes and savoury nutty oak flavours characterise the palate. This Chardonnay has a round, textured palate harmoniously balanced by a fine natural acidity that leads to a long, persistent finish.

The name ‘The Paringa’ denotes the single-vineyard origin of this wine. Lindsay McCall planted the first vines on the Paringa Estate vineyard in 1985, with ten acres being under vine by 1990. From this site fruit of distinction is born from a combination of red volcanic (Ferrasol) soil, a north-facing aspect and altitude of 146m on Paringa Road, Red Hill South. In creating this wine viticulture and winemaking practices are approached with the intent of preserving a pure expression of the site from the soil through to bottle.
