A medium-bodied Bordeaux showing concentrated fruit aromas backed by delicate woody notes. In the mouth is has good freshness, while the structure shows high-quality tannins. Nicely balanced, velvety and powerful. The vines are cultivated according to “la lutte raisonnée”, using sustainable agricultural methods and reducing the amount of chemicals in order to respect the land and its environment. The vines are grown in clay and silt soils.

2020 Superfly, Rock of Wisdom

Built for drinking now, this has the unfettered ‘lo-fi’ feeling of a Shiraz made without much tinkering. A vibrant juicy number with red and blue fruits jumping out the glass, soft gentle tannins and minimal time in old French oak delivers the fun times within. The fruit is sourced from a famous block on the edge Koonunga that is renowned for its red dirt over clay soils.

2019 ‘Altitude 969’, Doña Paula
£2295Add to BasketThis stunning blend of Petit Verdot, Bonarda and Malbecis made grapes picked at an altitude of 969 metres above sea level hence the name ‘Altitude 969’. It is one of a trio of Dona Paula wines focusing on the altitude of unique and exceptional vineyards. The other 2 being ‘Altitude 1100’ and ‘Altitude 1350’. All three are exceptional and available from us.
In the glass the ‘Altitude 969’ is just delicious, the Petit Verdot offers aromas of blueberries and jasmine; Bonarda delivers intense notes of blackberries and raspberries and a touch of Malbec adds volume to the palate and a long finish.
This wine takes its name from the average height of the selected parcels for this blend. The grapes come from Finca El Alto in Ugarteche, Luján de Cuyo, where the Petit Verdot vines are planted at 1,030 metres above sea level in the stoniest plots which have the presence of calcium carbonate. The Bonarda vines are planted in the lowest part of the same vineyard, at approximately 908 metres’ elevation, where the soil is mostly clay with gravel and pebbles. The Malbec also comes from the same vineyard. The double cordon trained vines are drip irrigated and they yield between seven to 10 tonnes per hectare. The climate is characterised by its warm days and cool nights, with thermal amplitude of 14°C and an average annual rainfall of 250 millimetres. At Doña Paula the vineyards have always been managed with sustainable farming practices.

In the glass the ‘Altitude 1100’ has floral aromas of violet and rosehip from the Malbec that are complemented by spicy notes, good volume and silky tannins from the Syrah, while the Cabernet Sauvignon imparts a great structure in this complex and balanced wine.
‘Altitude 1100’ comes from three blocks in the Los Indios vineyard, which is located in El Cepillo, San Carlos, in the Uco Valley, at 1,100 metres above sea level. The climate is characterised by warm days and cold nights; the average temperature variation is 16 °C, which encourages a long ripening period in which the grapes slowly build aromatic complexity and the fruit is balanced by refreshing acidity. The average annual rainfall reaches 300 millimetres. The sandy loam soil offers good drainage and encourages low fertility; in some sectors, there are gravel and stone deposits of colluvial origin, bound by a thick, 70 centimetre-deep layer of calcium carbonate known as black caliche. Black caliche appears in very old soils, where the vine vigour is reduced so the grapes produced have concentrated flavours. At Doña Paula, the vineyards have always been managed using sustainable agricultural practices.

2019 Nivarius ‘Edicion Limitada’, Palacios Vinos de Finca
£2295Add to BasketBodegas Nivarius specialises in the production of white wines from cool-climate vineyards in Rioja. This wine represents the perfect blend of the terroir and the cool-climate region, with its warm days and cool nights prolonging the ripening period and encouraging aromatic richness. The Viura grapes come from the sandy soils of the Najerilla, and the limestone soils of the Sonsierra, and are blended with Maturana Blanca from the Iregua Valley, grown in sandy soils. Maturana Blanca is an ancient native variety with small clusters and small, elliptical grapes which produces vibrant, tangy wines characterised by high, natural acidity.
In the glass it has an aromatic and complex bouquet of baked apple, floral and balsamic notes, layered with nutty tones and a hint of minerality. The palate is fresh, rounded and balanced, with lovely texture and finishes with stone fruits and a touch of almond.
Nivarius, meaning ‘snow-drift’, takes its name from the common sight of the snowy blanket which covers the vineyards in winter.

Brilliant water-like colour with a faint greenish tinge to the edges. The nose displays punchy aromas of lime zest, lemon and Granny Smith apple followed by some flinty mineral notes. Crunchy lime and green apple fruits are underpinned by crisp, lemony acidity with wet steel and mineral characters flowing onto the zesty aftertaste.

2022 ‘The Raptor’ Pinot Noir, Lake Chalice

Beautifully structured, with fine-grained tannins, the flavours are echoed on the smooth, supple palate, flowing through to hints of coffee on the lingering finish.
The grapes are sourced exclusively from Lake Chalice’s 11-hectare Eyrie Vineyard, which is located in the lower Waihopai Valley. The fruit is a hand-picked selection of clone 115 Pinot Noir. The 15-year-old vines are pruned to two canes, and the yields are carefully monitored, resulting in an intense fruit expression in the grapes. The high clay content in the soil profile is well suited to bringing out the best in the Pinot Noir variety.

The blocks were originally planted by Alvin Tollini’s father and grandfather and old-vine, low yielding Carignan remains from the original plantings and produces concentrated, flavoursome fruit. Alvin’s father added to the acreage after he returned from WWII. The Syrah and Grenache were planted by Alvin using the same time-honoured techniques and sustainable approach and they add layers of depth, complexity and balance to the blend. The vines are planted on southwest facing benches in the Redwood Valley and are cultivated with a meticulously sustainable approach.

The vines, many over 35 years old and planted on their own roots, deliver a Sauvignon Blanc that is both aromatic and texturally complex.

2023 ‘Amfora’ Orange Wine, Villa Noria

The grapes for the Amfòra cuvée come from vineyards between the Mediterranean Sea and the mountainous foothills. The Mediterranean climate, with its warm, dry summers and relatively mild winters, offers the vines excellent conditions in which to flourish. The high number of sunshine hours results in wines that are powerful, rich and aromatic, but also fresh due to the tempering effects of the Mediterranean Sea. The soils are made up mostly of clay-limestone and basaltic soil; the latter is a volcanic soil formed from ancient lava, which contains high proportions of iron and imparts a distinctive minerality to the wine. The vineyard is certified organic and HVE Level 3 certified for sustainability. The vines are surrounded by hedges to protect them from pesticide treatments in the neighbouring fields and also to provide a refuge for the wildlife, enhancing biodiversity. Harvested in the cool of the night to retain freshness and at high ripeness levels to avoid any green flavours or bitterness.
