  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2022-apertura-malbec-mendel/">2022 Apertura Malbec, Mendel</a>

    2022 Apertura Malbec, Mendel

    £1795

Mendel’s Apertura Malbec comes from the estate’s own vineyards located in an exceptional terroir of Luján de Cuyo with a view of the Sierras de Lunlunta. This Malbec, sourced from a vineyard planted in 1928, is managed embracing the same philosophy as in the plots destined for the top wines of Mendel. During maturation in barrels, the team at Mendel select very fruity wines, lighter in body and structure, looking for a very friendly, fresh, and easy-drinking wine but at the same time with great volume and round tannins.

Mendel Winery embodies the union of Roberto de la Mota with a nearly century-old Argentine family, whose sole objective is to produce wine of unquestionable, superior quality. Proprietor and longtime wine lover, Anabelle Sielecki, diligently tracked down the very best talent Argentina had to offer when seeking Mendel’s winemaker, and with utmost charm and perseverance, brought Roberto de la Mota on board.   Having worked for many years at the iconic Château Cheval Blanc in Saint-Émilion, Roberto de la Mota is one of Argentina’s most respected and experienced winemakers.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2019-carignan-olifantsberg/">2019 Carignan, Olifantsberg</a>

    2019 Carignan, Olifantsberg

    £1795

A complex expression of Carignan with notes of cured meat, spice, bay leaves and aniseed leading to dried cranberry and pomegranate flavours. Fresh on entry, with vibrant tannins and an elegant finish.

The vineyard is located on the slopes of the Olifantsberg Mountain Range where it endures wide diurnal temperature differences and strong winds. The grapes for this wine are from 100% bush vines grown on soils with a high percentage of shale and quartz. This is the rockiest vineyard on the farm and is planted at 350 metres above sea level. The vines are densely planted and endure a very dry and tough micro climate due to the high amount of rocks in the soil. The combination of rocky soils and high density planting, results in competition between the vines and in turn deeper root systems. The deep root systems enable the vine to develop a good buffer during drought conditions. The rocky soils also add more stress, so the vines deliver very small berries with a concentrated fruit, good body and fresh acidity.

    2017 Philip Shiraz, Mount Pleasant

    £1795

Mount Pleasant, based in the Hunter Valley, was established in 1921 by the legendary winemaker Maurice O’Shea, from 16.3 hectares of adjoining parcels of land, which he named Mount Pleasant.

Inspired by the first visit of a reigning monarch to Australia in 1954, Mount Pleasant ‘Philip’ Shiraz is the personification of a distinguished family history dating back more than 130 years. Made in an authentic Hunter Shiraz style, this complex wine is crafted from small parcels cultivated in the premium subregion of Pokolbin in the Hunter Valley.

Ample notes of fresh red and black berried fruits, subtle oak spice and hints of blueberry lead to a beautifully balanced palate with finely woven tannins and impeccable length.

2024 Mason Road GSM, Brookdale Estate

    £1795

This blend of Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault and Mourvèdre is medium-bodied with a layered density of fruit. Liquorice root, fennel seed and ground spice precede blackberries and bramble leaf on the rich, inviting nose. Red and black berries unroll to a juicy pomegranate finish, dusted with a hint of cacao.

The grapes for this wine were carefully selected from pockets of the vineyard specifically for their fruit flavours and mouthfeel. The vineyard is planted at the foot of the Du Toitskloof Pass in granite-rich soils with clay and quartz. The clay element offers high water retention properties and releases much-needed water during the warm summer months. The lowest part of the estate is at 220 metres above sea level, climbing to 330m at the highest part. At this altitude, the vines are exposed to strong winds that naturally reduce yields and offer a much-needed cooling influence in Paarl’s warm, dry climate.

Crafted from a meticulous selection of the finest estate-grown Merlot, the 2018 Antiguas Reservas Merlot represents Cousiño Macul’s unwavering dedication to heritage, precision, and age-worthy elegance. The “Antiguas Reservas” designation is reserved for wines that reflect both the estate’s rich lineage, dating back to its founding in 1856, and the highest level of varietal expression. Sourced from low-yielding vines cultivated in the Maipo Valley’s rocky, alluvial soils at the foot of the Andes, the grapes are chosen for their small clusters and concentrated flavour.

Vinified with a focus on preserving fruit purity and structure, this Merlot undergoes careful ageing in French oak barrels to develop texture, depth, and finesse.

In the glass, the bouquet is expressive and refined, offering aromas of ripe red berries, cherry and raspberry, layered with subtle smoky undertones and elegant notes of vanilla from barrel ageing. On the palate, it is vibrant and well-balanced, showcasing lush red fruit flavours complemented by medium-high acidity, polished tannins, and a long, persistent finish.

Elegant yet structured, the 2018 Antiguas Reservas Merlot exemplifies Cousiño Macul’s signature style, combining New World vibrancy with Old World sophistication. Ideal for enjoying now or cellaring for further complexity.

Established in the 1950s, the domaine has evolved over three generations into a specialist in expressive, terroir-driven wines. Today, under the careful direction of Jean-Christophe Dupré, the estate is committed to sustainable viticulture and precision winemaking, with vines thriving on clay-limestone soils near the village of Royer.

    2022 Premium Malbec, Piattelli Vineyards

    £1800

This opulent and smooth cool-climate Malbec delivers delightful aromas of ripe blackberry complemented by a touch of spice. Beautifully balanced with bright fruit flavours, the palate is marked by its structure and has an intense, spicy finish.

The vines are grown at high altitude in Cafayate, situated at 1,700 metres above sea level surrounded by the Andes Mountains. Cafayate is one of the highest regions in the world suitable for viticulture and this high altitude is what defines the terroir of the region. The vines are exposed to intense sunlight which results in the grapes forming thicker and darker skins to protect themselves from the ultraviolet rays; leading to more colour and flavour concentration in the grapes. The diurnal temperature difference results in an extended ripening season, producing concentrated grapes bursting with flavour but with a balanced structure.

    2022 Souson, Ailalá

    £1850

This delicious wine is the concept of winemaker Inma Pazos and sommelier Miguel Montoto and is one of the most interesting and delightful Spanish wines we stock. Others think so, too, as Mundus Vini awarded it a Gold Medal in 2024, and James Suckling gave it 92 points.

An aromatic and complex expression of the Sousón variety, with notes of cherry, cinnamon, lilac, violet and wild red berries through to a rounded palate with a savoury touch.

The grapes come from the Esposende and Gomariz estate vineyards in the Avia River Valley, which are located in the D.O. Ribeiro within the Galicia region of Spain. The D.O. is located between the Rias Baixas to the west and Ribeira Sacra to the east. The vines for this wine are planted around Esposende and Gomariz municipalities on a combination of terraced plots known as socalos, and sloped plots orientated to maximise exposure to the sun. The soils in the region are granitic sands, known locally as sábrego, which warm up quickly and retain the heat. The region is greatly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean with relatively high rainfall and humidity, although its inland location shelters it from the impact of Atlantic storms. High levels of sunshine allow the grapes to reach excellent maturity levels, however the characteristic high acidity from the cooler influences, results in wines of great balance.
