    2022 Souson, Ailalá

    £1850

This delicious wine is the concept of winemaker Inma Pazos and sommelier Miguel Montoto and is one of the most interesting and delightful Spanish wines we stock. Others think so, too, as Mundus Vini awarded it a Gold Medal in 2024, and James Suckling gave it 92 points.

An aromatic and complex expression of the Sousón variety, with notes of cherry, cinnamon, lilac, violet and wild red berries through to a rounded palate with a savoury touch.

The grapes come from the Esposende and Gomariz estate vineyards in the Avia River Valley, which are located in the D.O. Ribeiro within the Galicia region of Spain. The D.O. is located between the Rias Baixas to the west and Ribeira Sacra to the east. The vines for this wine are planted around Esposende and Gomariz municipalities on a combination of terraced plots known as socalos, and sloped plots orientated to maximise exposure to the sun. The soils in the region are granitic sands, known locally as sábrego, which warm up quickly and retain the heat. The region is greatly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean with relatively high rainfall and humidity, although its inland location shelters it from the impact of Atlantic storms. High levels of sunshine allow the grapes to reach excellent maturity levels, however the characteristic high acidity from the cooler influences, results in wines of great balance.

2023 ‘Vale de Mata’ Red, Vale da Mata

    £1850

Vale da Mata is the name of a small, old vineyard located in the foothills of Serra de Aire, in Cortes. The vineyard has a maritime climate and is influenced by the Atlantic Ocean.

The wine displays floral notes combined with lively red fruits and well-integrated oak. Smooth and round on the palate, with a bright acidity that leaves a vibrant, lifted finish.

The winemaking respects the expression of its terroir, cultivating the vines sustainably and using minimal intervention in the winery. They use only wild yeasts in the wines, and all operations, from winter pruning to harvesting, are carried out manually.

2020 Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, Berton Vineyard

    £1895

The Reserve Coonawarra Cabernet has an impenetrable black colour with a vibrant garnet hue. The aromas are powerful and complex with a wealth of fruit ranging from ripe blackcurrant and blackberries with hints of nutmeg and cinnamon. The rich and harmonious palate displays abundant flavours of prune, plum jam and mint, underpinned by fine toasty French oak and defined by a soft yet dense tannin profile.

The grapes come from two parcels of fruit within the same vineyard, in the prized Terra Rossa region of Coonawarra. One block is on a slightly more elevated area of the vineyard, which produces more subtle fruit characters. The warm days are moderated by off-shore breezes and the rich red loam over free draining limestone soil is the foundation for the Coonawarra’s justified reputation for producing premium quality Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.

    2023 Hey Malbec, Matias Riccitelli

    £1895

Another cracking Malbec from Matias Riccitelli, don’t be fooled by the fun label as this is a stylish, cool-climate Malbec delivering aromas of wild dark fruits, vanilla and chocolate. Complex and rich on the palate, with juicy black fruits, violet and black pepper enveloped in soft ripe tannins through to an opulent finish.

The grapes are grown in two locations: Perdriel and Galtallary. The vineyards at Perdriel are situated at an altitude of 980 metres above sea level, near the banks of the Mendoza River. This proximity to the river provides high levels of water retention in the vines, which are over 80 years old.  The region has a continental climate, with cool winters and mild summers, warm days and cooler nights. The soils are sandy silt and rocky, with very good drainage, which also promotes root growth. Irrigation is via the traditional technique of flooding. These attributes give the Malbecs great intensity, notable red and black fruit aromas, minerality and a very gentle structure.

The Galtallary vineyards sit at a higher altitude of 1,500 metres. A continental climate prevails, with cold winters, mild summers and good diurnal temperature differences. The soils are loamy clay and calcareous with a depth of 80cm above a rocky subsoil. This soil has good drainage and here the vineyards are drip irrigated. Hand pruning and a green harvest takes place in both vineyards to ensure the optimum exposure to the sunlight, while concentrating the flavours in the berries.

    2018 ‘Vel’Uveyra’, Ronsel do Sil

    £1895

An expressive and complex wine with layers of wild berried fruits, flinty, earthy notes and a subtle hint of violet. Beautifully balanced, with a velvety texture and a touch of balsamic on the finish.

Ronsel do Sil is a family-run winery located in DO Ribeiro Sacra, near Parada de Sil, in the North West of Spain. The vineyard is manually cultivated on the steep slopes of the Sil River Canyons, on granitic terraces originally built by the Romans, which are known locally as ‘bancales’. Only 5% of mountain viticulture remains in the world, and in Ribeira Sacra it is known as ‘Heroic Viticulture’ due to the dangerous harvest entailed.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2018-rasteau-domaine-combe-juliere/">2018 Rasteau, Domaine Combe Julière</a> Red Wine

    2018 Rasteau, Domaine Combe Julière

    £1950

An opulent wine with a depth of concentrated black fruit. The tannins are present but enjoyable as they are polished and integrated. Black fruits on the nose are echoed on the palate with a touch of liquorice and spice through to a long, silky finish.  The 2018 summer was very hot and dry in the southern Rhône, which allowed the grapes to reach excellent maturity, resulting in expressive wines with wonderful fruit concentration.

The vineyard is situated in the Rasteau appellation on hillside slopes which offer good drainage and sun exposure. The soil layers are complex due to their various origins. Brown clay, which comprises sediment from the Alps from the miocène period, and grey clay, which is made up of sediment from algae, overlap here at root level imparting extra complexity to the wine. The sunny weather and strong northern wind, known as the Mistral, keep the vines dry and healthy. The vines have an average age of 70 years and are cultivated according to sustainable methods.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2018-shiraz-tahbilk/">2018 Shiraz, Tahbilk</a> Red Wine

    2018 Shiraz, Tahbilk

    £1950

Tahbilk Shiraz is sourced from nearly 30 hectares of vines planted at various times from the 1930s through the early 2000s. Made using traditional Tahbilk techniques; fermentation takes place in 150 + year old open vats, before maturation in French and American oak for 18 months before bottling. The resultant releases are noted as being fruit-driven wines of much flavour and substance, proven over the years to develop added character when cellared. Varietally expressive with ample plum and blackberry fruits, there is warm earth and spicy savouriness that immediately appeals with a backbone of fine, opulent tannins and a rich, persistent finish.

Tahbilk’s vineyards are grouped along the banks of the Goulburn River, a branch of it which flows through the estate. The vines are grown at around 134 metres elevation of gently undulating and flat terrain. The soils are sandy loam with ferric oxide content, which vary from very fine sand near the anabranch to denser loams on the plains. Tahbilk has Shiraz vineyards dating back from the 1860s to the 1990s. The oldest surviving block is the ‘1860 block’; planted on its own roots in sandy soils, which has made it impossible for phylloxera to colonise the vine roots.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2019-pinot-noir-old-stage/">2019 Pinot Noir, Old Stage</a>Red Wine

    2019 Pinot Noir, Old Stage

    £1950

A balanced and graceful Pinot Noir with aromas of strawberry, raspberry and rhubarb and a touch of sage. Beautifully integrated oak supports the pure fruit through to a silky finish.

The fruit comes from two distinct Pinot Noir vineyards: Danny’s Vineyard and Grava, two of the most northerly plantings in Monterey County. The vineyards nestle up to the Gabilan Mountain Range on the eastern side of the Salinas Valley; approximately 10 miles directly across from the Santa Lucia Highlands. The marine influence of the nearby Monterey Bay and the morning fog which clears for the afternoon sun, results in a cool mesoclimate and a long hang-time for the fruit. The grapes reflect the cool climate character, with complex aromatics and flavours and natural balancing acidity.
